Adam sat silently in the driver’s seat, deep in thought about where Jason could be. After a moment, I turned to him and suggested we check the gas stations along the highway. Maybe someone had seen him, or perhaps he had stopped to fill up. It was going to be a long day, but it felt like a lead worth chasing.

The highways stretched endlessly as we moved from one gas station to another, each stop feeling like it blurred into the next. We’d jump out of the car, show Jason’s picture around, and ask if anyone had seen him. With every ‘no’ we received, the weight of the situation grew heavier. But we didn’t give up. We couldn’t.
