Karen Klein worked for the Greece Central School District in Upstate New York and had been doing so for the past 23 years of her life. Karen was a bus driver for 20 years and for the remaining 3 she had become a bus monitor.

She was responsible for watching out and ensuring that all school children were safe on the bus to and from school each day. At the age of 68, she had dedicated her life to ensuring these children arrived at their destinations safely.

Karen had gone partially deaf and was using a hearing g aid at the time. She was a fully committed and dedicated worker but she never thought that her life would come to what it did. After being so hardworking she never thought her last working years would end as they did.

She was about to experience what she said was, “one of the worst acts of human behavior that I have ever had to endure.”

Karen had started her day as she usually did. She was seated amongst the traveling children and on their way to school they were. Karen knew just how mean kids could be but she had seen quite a progression over the years with regards to behavior.

These 7th graders had not decided to pick on kids their own size but rather decided to disrespect Karen. They began to verbally assault her and they were not stopping. These pre-teens were actually bullying someone 55 years older than they were.

But, it didn’t stop with the verbal assault. These 7th graders took it to the next level and too far in fact. As most teenagers do these days, they though taking to social media would be a great idea. But perhaps they didn’t think twice…

The children whipped out their phones and began to record the incident. They were harassing Karen at this point as they called her names, threatened her, and even touched her. The kids were recording the entire event as Karen broke down and started crying.

The police received a call saying one of the boys’ families had v=been taken hostage. They took the claim seriously and had to come up with a plan, after all, it could be a dangerous and dire situation.

Police acted quickly and cautiously as they surrounded the home and had to suss out the scene before simply checking or walking up to the front door. However, they managed to make contact with the family inside.

Once managing to safely communicate with the family inside they were told it was not true and the call was simply to spook police. A policeman told ABC, “We had to respond to that as it is almost a barricaded gunman, then we had to set up perimeters and get the house surrounded.

One of the fathers spoke up about the incident and the drastic after-effects that were underway, “You’ve got to remember. He’s a thirteen-year-old kid. It was a stupid mistake and he’s paying for it,” Robert Helms said.

Karen Klein wanted an apology and severe repercussions. She wanted the boys to be banned from sports and leisurely school activities. Of course, she definitely wanted an apology.

Two of the boys out of the four originally came out apologizing in statements from the Greece Police Department. The first said, “I am so sorry for the way I treated you.

They went on by saying, “When I saw the video I was disgusted and could not believe I did that. I am sorry for being so mean and I will never treat anyone this way again.”

Just after the video went viral an initiative was brought about by a complete stranger. The initiative was started on Indiegogo.com to fundraise money for Karen Klein. With an initial goal of $5,000. They had no clue what was in store.

The fundraiser was set and the goal was reached within 24 hours but that’s not all…

The campaign managed to reach $125,000 in the first 24 hours and donations were pouring in. A further initiative was started on Change.org. WHich asked people to sign a petition asking for the money to not be taxed. The petition received over 8,000 signatures.

However, the donation was not actually taxable anyways so…

Karen reacted to the apologies saying she thought the boys could do better. After all, this attack was truly brutal to her and her family. In the video, one of the kids asks if she is sweating and Karen replies, “I am crying.”

The boys received their punishment which was truly thorough, the school took action as well as the police and they managed to come to an agreement with a fair punishment.

The boys’ lives would be rather different from the punishment, but what was it?

Suspension

The boys were suspended from school for a whole year. Not just sport or events but the entire school year. They felt it necessary after the insane remarks made.

However, this was not all, this was simply from the school’s side.

The Police ordered that the boys do a year of community service. They would have a productive year ahead of themselves. The community service would be with senior citizens…They truly got served.

Karen was surely having the last laugh now, or was she?

Karen said she was happy with the punishment, she thought it was fair. The best part for her was that the boys at least would not be sitting home doing anything all year but it would be productive for them.

Her Prize

The Indiegogo fundraiser was set to be open for a month. In those days it managed to raise enough money for Karen to retire. The money was enough for her to live comfortably for the rest of her life and she was truly deserving.

After being so dedicated to the district’s school system Karen was able to retire. The amount donated will leave you stunned!

A ceremony was held where Karen was given a cheque representing how much was in fact donated. People had donated from across the globe. Karen was in awe when she was handed a huge cheque for $703,833. Her life was changed in that instant.

But luckily for her, that was not all she would receive, Southwest Airlines said that it would send her and nine others on an all-expense-paid trip to Disneyland. How cool?

Klein told CNN she’s thinking about quitting her job and doing volunteer work after some supporters suggested the donations were enough for retirement. “I thought, ‘That’s not a bad idea!’ ” she said.

She’s also going to donate the money to organizations that support autism and Down syndrome causes said her daughter. Klein wants to raise awareness because of family members with autism and Down syndrome, who may also be victims of bullying

She is also definitely surprised and overwhelmed and by everyone’s support and encouragement. Klein said that it was so nice to know that she was not alone. Although she was not entirely happy with what took place she is grateful for how it ended.

Her daughter also went on to say that her mother plans to be in contact with her accountant and pay all her bills before any making long-term plans with her unexpected bonus.

Mrs. Klein had a lot of public attention due to the story, she guest appeared on many television talks shows retelling her story over and over again. Although she is not one for public attention she felt it was important for awareness.

She agreed to appear on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, and Anderson Cooper 360, telling them that she doesn’t wish any harm to the students who tormented her on a bus ride home in upstate New York.

During her many interviews, she said, “I have no idea what brought on the outburst, perhaps trying to impress each other – they each try to outdo the other. I don’t think they ever picked on the other kids…just me”.

The young teenagers have yet to be charged as criminals, but one thing is for sure their parents are dealing with a lot of hate mail, angry phone calls and of course a bad reputation.

She also told the show that it took great strength to bite her tongue during the abuse. ‘It took a lot of willpower because I’m not usually that calm – just ask my kids. They can tell you how I can lose my temper, as she laughed that off.

Unfortunately, her emotions got the best of her and she continued to say, ‘I’m sorry that your sons acted the way they did’. I’m sure they don’t act that way at home, but you never know what they’re going to do when they step out of the house. They should’ve been taught to respect their elders no matter who it is.’ Way to go Mrs. Klein!

Following this, one of the boys’ fathers who was shocked by this behavior came to speak with Mrs. Klein, offering her a hug and an abundance of apologies, saying he had no idea how his son could act in such a terrible way.
