There were multiple opinions circulating about how serious Diana and Dodi’s relationship was. So much was going on in the late summer of 1997. According to Vanity Fair, Fayed had full intentions to give the Princess of Wales a ring. But other reports stated that Diana told her friend Rosa Monckton that if Dodi gifted her the ring, she would only wear it on the right hand.

But then other, contradicting reports also seemed to surface. According to Monckton, Diana was simply trying to make Hasnat Khan jealous and resentful. But at the same time, Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed believed the ring that his son gave to Diana was actually to commemorate the couple’s engagement.
