Eve was a devoted grandma and mother to three grown daughters, much older than both Jennifer and Julian. Her extensive parenting background served as a treasure of knowledge for the pair. It was reassuring to have an experienced guide living next door who had quick answers to all of their many questions as new parents. Although Eve had always been a great neighbor, their relationship had become closer after she found out about their first child. The phone only rung once before Eve snatched it up. She responded so quickly that it was clear she was eager. Jennifer was aware that Eve, who is constantly looking for a little thrill, reacted quickly to the news. She quickly packed her things and got ready to go to the hospital with the couple.
The hospital was bustling with bustle as they walked in. The doctors immediately got to work, performing a battery of painstakingly comprehensive tests with unfailing attention and professionalism. The otherwise silent room was filled with the sound of the ultrasound equipment, and Julian’s growing anxiety was heightened by each beep. However, everything returned to normal after each test. Jennifer and their unborn child seemed to be in perfect health. They were not, however, relieved. They couldn’t find the answers they were seeking. The veterinarian’s words, which implied that something might be amiss, lingered in their thoughts and made them feel uncertain and afraid. After they got home, Jennifer was unable to control her feelings. She was so overcome by her emotions that she fell to the ground. Her grief reverberated throughout their formerly tranquil home as she shouted loudly, tears streaming down her face. She wailed, “I don’t want to have to choose between Whiskers and our baby.” Julian made an effort to reassure her by telling her not to worry so much. “Perhaps there is nothing wrong,” he answered softly. He was aware that things might go wrong, but he didn’t want to voice his own worries and cause his wife more pain.
