Crocodile Dundee was a massive hit after its release in 1986. It was not only popular in the US but also in other parts of the world. This wildlife adventure movie was even nominated for an Oscar and bagged an award from the Golden Globes. What’s the reason behind the film’s huge success? Perhaps, it’s because of its versatile cast or witty one-liners. Sure, the electric chemistry between leads Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski didn’t hurt. They even took their romance off-screen, but we will get to that later.
Sure, we don’t need to tell you that ever since the movie was released it became a cult classic. An enormous fan base grew instantaneously. Not to mention, critics loved the films too! Not every box office hit is loved by critics, so that’s another feather in Hogan’s cap! Once it got an Oscar nomination, they made the smart decision to turn the film into a trilogy. Wow, the initial premiere was April 30, 1986. We feel old! Well, that was the Australian debut. In the United States, the film wasn’t released until September 26, 1986. Did you know it quickly became the second highest-grossing movie in the USA during that year? That’s wild! Over 46 million tickets were sold in the United States. Pretty impressive don’t you think?
An interesting tidbit you might like to hear is that there were two versions of the first film. One was Australian while the other was…well, international. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know which of the two had the Australian slang in it. However, most fans don’t even know how this whole story concept became a film. Well, Paul Hogan is the man to thank for making it into a movie. While he was traveling in NYC, he remarked, “There’s a lot about Dundee that we all think we’re like; but we’re not, because we live in Sydney. He’s a mythical outback Australian who does exist in part—the frontiersman who walks through the bush, picking up snakes and throwing them aside, living off the land who can ride horses and chop down trees and has that simple, friendly, laid-back philosophy. It’s like the image the Americans have of us, so why not give them one?… We’ve always been desperately short of folk heroes in this country. Ned Kelly is pathetic. So are the bushrangers.”
Now, that we covered all that…Do you still remember all of the cast? Do you know where they are now? Let’s travel down memory lane and revisit the cast of Crocodile Dundee.
