Mark Freeley is a dog lover and spends a lot of time with his dogs, Storm and Sara. We doubt there are a lot of pet owners out there who spend time with their pets as much as he does with his. However, he still finds the time to go to the local animal shelter to take care of the animals that need a home. Freeley loves it when he gets to spend his afternoon with Storm and Sara, enjoying the great outdoors. However, one particular day stands out from all the outings they’ve ever had, as fate brought them to the ocean and they chanced upon something which changed everything.
Fated To Find
Freeley’s Golden Retriever Storm has a fantastic personality. It should not come as a surprise since dogs give back the treatment they get: love, attentiveness, and plenty of time spent outdoors.

Fated To Find
Mark often goes out for long walks with Storm because it is pretty hard to resist allowing such a good dog to run around outside. Mark even lets Storm off his leash and on that day, the dog was roaming around when they noticed something in the water…
A Dog’s Instinct
Like they usually did, Mark was with his dogs strolling along the Long Island Sound, one of the most placid and beautiful locations on the whole North American coastline. This site is often frequented by the trio.

A Dog’s Instinct
They knew the area well, so if something did not look quite right in the water, they would immediately notice. However, it was Storm who acted first when they noticed something was amiss. Who knows what might have happened if he had not?
Where Is Long Island Sound?
Most people have heard of Long Island, but where exactly is Long Island Sound? Long Island Sound is the area of water between Long Island and the coast of southern Connecticut.

Where Is Long Island Sound?
Long Island Sound stretches 110 miles (177 km) from the East River in New York City, along the North Shore of Long Island. The water has a unique mix of freshwater from the East River and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean.
A Great Place To Be
Long Island Sound was a great place during the summer; it wasn’t uncommon to find families with their pets around the water or going in for a swim. Mark brought his dogs to Long Island Sound quite frequently.

A Great Place To Be
Storm loved going to the beach and running around in the sand or going swimming in the water, and this special day was no exception. Storm was so excited to go to one of his favorite places, but he had no idea what sort of hero he’d become.
Racing Headfirst
The instant Storm noticed something odd, he had already started running towards the water, diving in headfirst and braving the cold waters of the North Atlantic.

Racing Headfirst
Storm zeroed in on the object that was floating and Mark tried to see what exactly was bobbing up and down behind his dog. Could it be a log or something that got swept away? At the beach, Mark’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the horizon.
Doing What Goldens Do Best
Storm knew it was his time to shine and be a hero for the community, and he didn’t shy away from the task. He ran head-first right into the frigid cold water as soon as he knew there was a problem he could potentially solve.

Doing What Goldens Do Best
Golden Retrievers are known for being extremely sweet and gentle dogs and knowing how to help people or things in danger, and Storm proved these traits to be correct on this day. He followed his instincts and saved the day.
Good Boy!
As dogs do, Storm paddled his way to the shore bringing the object with him. Even before the dog’s paws hit the sand at the beach, Mark could already see the object wasn’t an object at all, but some kind of creature.

Good Boy!
In a viral video that captured the incident, you can hear Mark calling over to his dog and encouraging him to bring the animal to him in spite of not being able to identify yet what species Storm had found. Mark can be heard saying, “Good boy, Storm,” and “Here boy, here!”
Storm The Hero
Mark always knew his dog Storm was an amazing animal, but he didn’t realize exactly what Storm could be capable of. When he noticed the object that Storm pulled out of the water was a living creature, Mark couldn’t believe what his dog was doing.

Storm The Hero
What he found surprised Mark. His dog was truly a life-saving hero; but what now? Was this creature going to be okay? How could Mark and Storm help this poor thing even more?
A Little Fellow
As Storm came out of the water, more and more of his body surfaced, and it finally dawned on Mark what kind of animal Storm was saving: a deer!

A Little Fellow
It’s not uncommon for deer to take a dip, but the little fellow appeared to be in way over his head. He was actually in shallow water, but the ocean’s cold, wild waves still threatened him.
How Did This Happen?
Most people do not know this fact because they do not see it happening very often, but deer are actually usually quite strong swimmers. Of course, like any living creature, some are better at things than others.

How Did This Happen?
For the most part, a deer can usually swim and keep itself afloat. The problem today was that the cold water and the waves were making it difficult for this deer to help itself out.
Caring For The Wild Animal
Making his way to the two animals emerging from the water, Mark felt worried for the deer. With regard to Storm, it seemed as if some paternal switch had been turned on in his canine brain seeing as he appeared to be trying to bring the shocked deer to its senses.

Caring For The Wild Animal
While Storm was licking the deer, Mark was blown away by how much the canine cared about the wild animal. He thought about how his dog had delicately brought the scared fawn ashore.
Animal Instincts
“Storm just plunged into the water and started swimming out to the fawn, grabbed it by the neck, and started swimming to shore, and then he started nudging it, and started pulling it to make sure she was gonna be OK, I guess,” Freeley said.

Animal Instincts
He could see that the baby deer was hurt, but Storm took control of the situation and did exactly what he felt was best; he tried to help the fawn to the best of his ability.
The Sweetest Creatures
Golden Retrievers are almost always extremely sweet and caring dogs with very wise brains and great capabilities, but Storm took these traits to a new level today. He surpassed any expectations set for dogs in the world.

The Sweetest Creatures
Mark couldn’t believe the brave thing his dog had just done; he knew he had a great dog on his hands, but he didn’t realize his dog could save another animal’s life so effortlessly. He didn’t know how to react or what to do!
Is It Just In His Nature?
Some people wondered at first whether the dog was truly a hero, or if he jumped in to get the deer because he thought it was food. His owner, Mark, was quick to jump in and defend his furry best friend.

Was It Just In His Nature?
“I was there, and if anybody knows Storm, they know that’s not in his heart. He is the most gentle, gracious dog you ever want to meet.” Usually, Golden Retrievers are not known for being aggressive or attacking another animal for prey.
A Hero
Mark recorded the incident using his phone and the video went viral. It proved Storm’s quick thinking saved the fawn dramatically seeing as the deer was in complete shock.

A Hero
Even though the deer was still breathing, Storm did not leave the deer’s side and nurtured the fawn as though it were one of his pups who he had rescued from the water. Mark never doubted that Storm was special, but now his dog was a hero, too!
Immediately Taken To The Deer
It has been mentioned that Storm had taken to the deer right away. Mark was in a tizzy following the emotional rescue but he took control of his emotions in order to take stock of the thing that had just gone down.

Immediately Taken To The Deer
For now, Storm was doing an excellent job taking care of the shocked fawn, but Mark knew he had to think of a plan for what to do next. As he had his emotions under control, Mark started devising his plan…
What Should He Do Next?
Mark knew he needed to think on his feet about the best way to approach this situation, and quickly. The deer was still alive, but Mark knew he needed medical attention fast.

What Should He Do?
Mark wanted to get the deer seen by someone who really knew how to take care of him; while Mark was familiar with some care methods, he knew someone else would be much better suited to handle this particular occurance.
Asking For Help
It has been mentioned that Mark is well connected with the protocol for local animal rescues. He even provides legal assistance to animal shelters located in his area.

Asking For Help
He immediately thought of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League, whom he knew are professionals that gets a job done. He knew someone other than himself would be able to help the injured deer better than he could, so he did the right thing and sought out help.
Getting Help
After Storm brought the little deer back to shore and saved its life, Mark made sure the creature received the assistance that it needed. Though he wished he could help the deer himself, he knew he couldn’t.

Getting Help
The Strong Island Animal Rescue League, an amazing organization created to help animals in the area, was founded in 2016 by Erica Kutzing and Frankie John Floridia.
The Rescue League
The organization is run by the husband and wife team, with Frankie spending all of his time on it and Erica devoting the hours that she can when she is not running her pet store.

The Rescue League
The couple rushed to the scene right away when Mark told them the situation. This was just the kind of animal rescue that they established the league for. They had no idea this would later become national news.
Running Back Into The Water
Mark was amazed at how his dog was acting towards the poor animal. Storm was still taking care of the deer back at the beach when suddenly the deer popped up on its legs.

Running Back Into The Water
Mark was shocked to see the deer starting to run back into the water, but Storm (bless his little heart) instinctively ran after the fawn. The deer didn’t know what was going on, and likely didn’t know better than to run back in.
Saved From Danger
Storm was not going to allow the little deer to put itself in danger again, but Mark could not understand what exactly was going on with the deer. Why was he running back into the water? Didn’t he know that was not a safe place for him to be?

Saved From Danger
Mark wasn’t sure what to do; if the deer wanted to go back into the water, how much could Mark stop him, even while he knew how bad of an idea it was?
A Struggle
Storm was already tired after the marathon swim and was struggling to reach the fawn who was flailing in the water. Fortunately for Storm, he wouldn’t need to pull another Michael Phelps thanks to Frankie and Erica.

A Struggle
Frankie dove in the water and swam quickly to get to the deer before it became too late. As for the Golden Retriever Storm, who had put himself in danger selflessly once again, he was struggling to keep afloat.
Just In Time
Thankfully for Storm, Frankie managed to get to the deer and bring the poor animal back to the beach. When they got there, the fawn could barely move from exhaustion.

Just In Time
The fawn being so exhausted was understandable, seeing as it had been through a lot in a really short amount of time. Frankie and Erica brought the terrified creature to their car.
They Got Lucky
If they came a moment later, the deer might have died since Storm was probably too tired to save the poor thing once more and it would have gone under the water. They could have saved the deer’s life… again.

They Got Lucky
Now that the rescuers had arrived, Storm and Mark could take a deep breath and know that the fawn was in good, trusting hands from here on out.
Too Young For Swimming
While the rescuers, together with the fawn, were racing to their center, one of them started to nurture the young deer back to health.

Too Young For Swimming
They might not have been able to explain the strange behavior of attempting to swim in dangerous waters, but they saw the reason why the deer could not handle the waves – it was too young and small.
Can Deer Swim?
Deer are not considered aquatic animals but if the fawn had been older, it might have been able to brave the cold and currents. Most deer can hold their own in shallow water, and some in deep water, but if the current is too strong it may be difficult.

Can Deer Swim?
Had it not been for Storm and Mark walking along the beach on this particular day at the right time, who knows what would’ve happened to this poor little fawn.
The STARS
While recuperating at the beach, Mark and Storm knew that the fawn was now safe since professionals, such as Erica and Frankie were taking care of the poor thing.

The STARS
The Strong Island Animal Rescue Shelter, or also known as STARS, has been helping animals in need for several years. They’ve made such an incredible impact on the community.
What Is Strong Island Animal Rescue?
Since they started, they have dealt with all kinds of crises relating to both wild and domesticated animals. There couldn’t have been a better team to save the fawn. Without them, would the little baby fawn be okay?

What Is Strong Island Animal Rescue?
This dedicated group of people has saved countless animals’ lives, but on this particular day, they saved the life of one precious, scared fawn.
A Great Lesson
STARS deserves credit, but Storm played a big part in saving the fawn. The young deer would have drowned if the dog had not leaped in to help – something we can all learn and emulate when we come across someone or something that needs help.

A Great Lesson
The instant Storm realized something was not quite right, he acted immediately. He did not care to find out the kind of animal that needed help – he just jumped straight in. The question now was would the deer live?
Treatment From The Professionals
The deer was now under the care of Frankie and Erica, and the couple noticed he was suffering from subcutaneous emphysema, a condition which results from air that gets trapped under the skin.

Treatment From The Professionals
This condition may cause complications like infection, so the rescuers gave the young deer antibiotics. A possible infective could kill the poor deer. They fed the little one baby formula with fresh grass and hoped the fawn would get better soon.
Will The Deer Be Okay?
Luckily, most cases of subcutaneous emphysema don’t need to be professionally or surgically treated-unless they’re quite severe. Lucky for this fawn, he was under great care.

Will The Deer Be Okay?
Though the baby fawn was not in excellent condition, the most important thing is that he was alive, and that Storm was also doing okay. What happened on this day at the beach is something these people will never forget.
On The Way To Recovery
As Erica and Frankie took care of the deer, they saw it was getting better over time, and though it was not in tip-top condition yet, it was definitely on its way. Thankfully, Storm and Mark were there to save it.

On The Way To Recovery
Otherwise, the young deer would have drowned. Thanks to the efforts of the pairs Mark and Storm and Frankie and Erica, the fawn would be soon making a full recovery.
Planning For Recovery
Back at STARS, Frankie and Erica already came up with a plan for the recovery of the deer when they first brought the animal in. First, they made sure it received the medical treatment that it needed.

Planning For Recovery
Any injuries had to be treated to ensure the animal made a full recovery. The next step in the process would be reintroducing the deer to mother nature since wild animals do not belong in clinics or shelters indefinitely.
Newest Friend
The most remarkable thing about this incident is the unlikely connection that developed between Storm and the young deer. While the latter was recovering, Mark brought Storm to see his newest friend.

Newest Friend
Mark thought it best to nurture the budding relationship since it was profound and began in a near-fatal rescue. The pair of animals got on remarkably well, astounding Mark and the crew at STARS.
Becoming Famous
Soon, the video that Mark took on his phone went viral. Many people were amazed to see the incredible dog and the heartwarming video was shared many times with others.

Becoming Famous
Eventually, national and local news stations began picking up on their story. Storm became like a celebrity as the video of his heroic exploit made him famous. The thing he did for the deer appeared so extraordinary, but Mark knew this was the same dog that he always loved.
Love And Attention
At a time when so many terrible things are happening in the world, such a good deed amazed people as it was done by a simple creature.

Love And Attention
A caring and kind dog deserves praise, and people have been giving Storm love and attention. Just like any other dog, Storm deserves to be loved with his owner’s whole heart!
Storm The Celebrity
Storm may be a hero now, but for the most part, his life has not changed and Mark does the same routine with his dog, though his walks have turned into a chance for passers-by to take photos with his dog.

Storm The Celebrity
If you ever see Storm walking around Port Jefferson, New York, be sure to stop and give him a few scratches behind the ear! He’s such a good boy and deserves to be recognized as such.
Friends With Others
It is known that man’s best friend is a dog and it is believed that this is a reciprocal relationship. As a matter of fact, it’s difficult to imagine another animal could take their place.

Friends With Others
However, this incident may prove that dogs can become really good friends with other creatures. Storm and the young deer’s relationship indicate that deer may be a dog’s best friend after all.
Everyone’s Best Friend
Though a dog is a man’s best friend, sometimes a dog is everyone’s best friend. Needless to say, animals like dogs have a capacity for doing good, like humans. Dogs know when someone is hurt, sad, in danger, or just in need of some extra cuddles, and it’s truly amazing.

Everyone’s Best Friend
We’re not sure what would have happened that day at the beach without Storm’s brave dog instincts, but we’re all so glad he was there to help save the day. He’ll truly be remembered as a hero for the rest of his life.
So, Who Is Mark Freeley?
On top of being the owner of a heroic and adorable group of pups, Mark Freeley is also a personal injury lawyer from East Setauket, New York. Mark has been practicing law in New York for over twenty years.

Who Is Mark Freeley?
During his legal career, Mark has successfully resolved thousands of accident and injury cases through his knowledge of litigation, arbitration, mediation, trial and settlement. He sure sounds like a great guy, especially due to his dog-parenting skills. We’re all so glad that Mark happened to bring Storm to the beach on this day.
How Gentle Are Golden Retrievers?
Golden Retrievers are known to be some of the sweetest, most gentle, family-friendly dogs that you could get. They are known for their soft mouths that are so gentle that they wouldn’t even crack a raw egg inside.

How Gentle Are Golden Retrievers?
Storm’s retriever genes really shined on this day, because some other dogs may have accidentally become aggressive with the baby fawn in the water. Storm was gentle and smart enough to rescue him and help him without hurting him in any way.
Animals Can Be Heroes Too
Storm is not the only animal that has bravely saved another animal in need. Though they’re just animals, they are actually quite commonly known to be amazing life-saving creatures when they are needed for help.

Animals Can Be Heroes Too
We hope that Storm’s story has shown light into some of the incredible things that animals, dogs, and Golden Retrievers are capable of, and we hope Storm is out there living his best life being the hero that he is.
Time To Choose One
Mariesa and Chris wanted to adopt another dog, which is how they found themselves looking for one to bring home. They only wanted one, but they could not just pick one among all the lovely dogs! Despite this, it only took Mariesa a single look to figure out which one to take.

Time To Choose One
Belly Full Of Unborn Pups
This very pregnant dog came up to them and licked their fingers. The huge dog needed a great home where she could give birth to the puppies, that much was clear. She was able to communicate all of this to Mariesa, who knew what she would do next. Despite this, she would later wonder if it was the right choice.

Bred And Then Surrendered At The Shelter
They were not prepared to hear the tragic story of the dog called Storie. Mariesa felt like crying for the faith of this dog, who once lived with a backyard breeder. Upon realizing it would be too much work and way too expensive to take care of her and her unborn puppies, Storie was taken to the shelter.

A Loving Home
We are glad to hear that Mariesa and Chris did not have any reservations about giving shelter, comfort, and love to this dog. However, the story did not end there. What the vet told them next came as a shock.

Fans Of Pit Bulls
Unlike many people, Mariesa and Chris were huge fans of pit bulls. In fact, they had a lot of these dogs waiting for them at home. To be exact, they were the parents of ten lovely dogs!

Loving Parents To Many Dogs
The two had a mutual passion for animals. In an interview, Mariesa actually talked about breaking things up with men who did not understand her love of dogs. They did not support her dream of filling a house with dogs.

Friendly Faces In These Places
It is a sad fact that animal shelters and rescue centers often have too much to deal with. Often, they have way too little resources to do as much for the animals as they want to. When the couple dropped by the Pibbles & More Animal Rescue, they did not fail to notice that the place was full of pit bulls.

Friendly Faces In These Places
A Reputation They Did Not Deserve
Pit bulls might have earned a bad name, but there is no science to back this up. The dog breed has a muscular physique and a large head, but they are not dangerous. Sadly, many states made it illegal to own these dogs.

Trying To Change The Stigma
Mariesa and Chris knew about all of this, which is why they adopted a lot of pit bulls. They never once experienced any violence from their fur children. That is why they wanted to do more for pit bulls.

Relationship Between Trauma And Birth
Generally, we humans have a tendency to underestimate exactly how intelligent animals are. After doing some online research, Chris and Mariesa found different reasons why this happens. One article seemed to perfectly describe the circumstances.

Relationship Between Trauma And Birth
Stressful Conditions
According to the article, animals typically experience trauma and stress when living in rescue shelters. Pregnant dogs naturally experience a greater risk than the rest. Shelters should help dogs, but sometimes the exact opposite happens.

Realizing How Dangerous The Situation Is
Mariesa and Chris kept doing some more research about it. Not only could Storie lose the puppies, but it could also be the end for her. Traumatized pregnant dogs typically do this if they feel that their puppies would only be in danger.

Helping Out
If you have the means, it is always ideal to foster. If this is not possible, you can do your part by donating or spreading the word. People who work at rescue centers and animal shelters are often overburdened, so this would help them a lot!
