No one is accusing people of purposely harming animals, but one of the most common things to be found in drains? Animals. This doesn’t only apply to the UK, either – it happens all around the world. And not just small animals like cats and dogs – animals like cows and sheep too! Many different animals have been rescued from drains unscathed. In the US, there are stories of alligators supposedly prowling the sewers, but most people see this as a myth.

Sewers might be a place designed for waste, but not everything that ends up there is worthless. One famous incident happened in Japan: in 2009, workers at a treatment facility got 5 million yen in gold. They were processing sludge when they came across the precious metal. Thanks to a large number of precision equipment manufacturers in the area, they made use of the metal. They found a total of 1,890 grams of gold per ton of trash!
