Building Trust
Encountering kids in unusual circumstances isn’t something most truck drivers experience. Hoping to break the ice, I asked, “What’s your name, kid?” He took a shaky breath before stammering, “It’s Jake.” I gave him a reassuring nod and encouraged him to relax. It was obvious he wasn’t comfortable with the situation, and honestly, neither was I. I decided to ease him in with a few simple questions—something to help settle his nerves. Maybe it would calm mine too.

A Small Offering
As the endless road stretched out before us, I realized we could both use something to eat. Keeping my eyes on the road, I reached into the glove compartment and fumbled around until my hand found a granola bar. I handed it to Jake with a warm smile, along with a bottle of water—a small gesture to show I meant no harm. His face lit up instantly, a spark of joy as he reached for the snack.
