Next Big Idea
When viewership for Gilligan’s Island started declining, producers of the show decided introducing a character who might possibly save the TV series. However, they didn’t think that an average castaway just would cut it, so they came up with the plan of introducing a dinosaur, which luckily was friendly, to add some spice into things. However, it proved to be too expensive to do. Creator Schwartz could remember what the CBS executive Hunt Stromberg Jr. said to him, “Gilligan and his pet dinosaur! It’s our answer to ‘Mr. Ed.’”
A Wild Ride
It is a miracle that Alan Hale Jr. managed to get to the audition for Gilligan’s Island. Why is that, you may ask? First, Hale Jr. was on a set in Utah and rode a horse from there. Next, he hitchhiked all the way to the city of Las Vegas in Nevada. And he wasn’t finished! Naturally, he flew to Los Angeles from Las Vegas to make it to the audition. This is truly something to be very grateful for because no one else could be the Skipper. He IS the Skipper!
