An Unexpected Message
Mike’s pocket buzzed as he was exiting the room. When he took out his phone, he discovered a fresh message. This wasn’t your typical “how are you? text. This one caught his notice right away since it was different. After a single look, Mike’s interest was tempered with a hint of urgency. He felt that something important was at stake as he looked down at the phone and back at his wife. The signs were mounting, whatever was going on.

Mike’s ears pricked up as he walked down the hallway. Nearby, two nurses were engaged in intense conversation. He slowed and heard snippets of what they were saying. One murmured, “Yellow wristbands, they’re being moved soon.” Mike furrowed his brows. As they continued talking about things changing inside hospital walls, his feet seemed to anchor him to his position. His wife was sporting one of those bracelets, and all of a sudden their talk felt like the puzzle pieces fitting together.
