After failing to find any new leads, Mike returned to his wife’s room while making a concerted effort to maintain a composed expression. When he pushed the door open, the hospital’s well-known antiseptic odor welcomed him. When his wife looked up, the concern in her eyes was still there despite her efforts to relax. Mike tried to hide his nervousness with a comforting grin. He was unable to express his genuine worry.

She observed the tightness around Mike’s eyes as she attempted to interpret his face. Her words were, “Everything okay, Mike? You look tense,” Mike grinned as though nothing was amiss and shook his head. “Nah, I’m just making sure everything’s running smoothly,” he replied. Though not totally persuaded, she chose not to press the issue and nodded. Unspoken concerns characterized their reunion for the time being as they both awaited a shift in the atmosphere.
