A divorcee was not regarded as a fitting wife, so Edward decided to abdicate the throne! This decision came less than a year into his reign as the British monarch! Back then, Edward declared, “I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of king, as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love.”
