For the opening scene of the TV show, he and Griffith were in a fishing setting and there was a scene that required Howard to throw a rock. However, being the little and gentle kid, Howard failed to throw the rock the way the producers wanted him to do. That was why one of the staff just hid in the bushes as he was the one who truly threw the rock.

No one really expected The Andy Griffith Show to be very successful to the point that it would be extended after a total of five seasons. As the production staff and the management offered Don Knotts a renewal of his contract so that he could continue filming for the show, he was offered to work with the Universal Pictures. It was a very tough decision for the actor to make, but he chose to sign the contract with Universal Pictures and that cost him to leave The Andy Griffith Show.
