Abandoned Railroads in America
The arrival of the railroad in 1827 transformed transportation. As you can see, the majority of abandoned railroads are in the country’s eastern half, which makes sense given the country’s continuous westward expansion throughout the 1800s. As planes and vehicles became increasingly common, trains became less popular, and more railroads were abandoned.
