Signs of Neglect
Arthur saw the obvious indications of commotion as he continued to roam. With their exposed roots and ripped foliage, some of the plants appeared disturbed. Arthur could practically hear Jared’s voice, distressed by the situation. Arthur thought, “Jared wouldn’t be happy to see this.” As though in agreement with him, a slight wind stirred the leaves. He was aware that Jared had noticed a reflection of affection and concern even when others wrote them off as “just plants.”

Arthur crouched next to the upended plants, his fingers skillfully adjusting their position. Setting things straight, like smoothing out wrinkles in time, has a healing effect. “Can’t let Jared’s hard work go to waste,” he said quietly to himself. As Arthur cared for each plant, hoping it would stand tall once more, he felt Jared’s presence even though he was no longer there. As the sun began to set, Arthur stayed, finding solace in a work well done.
