Since launching in 2007, Netflix has become an online force to reckoned with, especially in the competitive world of streaming networks and cable TV. Nevertheless, to maintain its competitive edge and ensure that fresh new content keeps flowing seamlessly, Netflix has had to make some tough decisions and remove some of its TV shows and movies. There could be multiple reasons why Netflix would cancel TV shows, from poor ratings to the natural season finale of a popular series. So we’ve collated a list of some of the TV shows that weren’t chilled enough for Netflix and didn’t quite make the cut for the next season.
The Get Down
Many fans were shocked after The Get Down was canceled after just one season. However, the hip-hop musical was weighted down by a large budget and hefty production delays. In spite of this, the director of the series is certain that the spirit of the show will live on, and hopes it might even be revived in the future.
He posted to Facebook how, “As for the real future of the show, the spirit of ‘The Get Down,’ and the story it has begun to tell … it has its own life. One that lives on today and will continue to be told somewhere, somehow, because of you, the fans and the supporters”.
Hemlock Grove
When Netflix decided the time was right for Hemlock Grove to come to an end back in 2015, it was not such a big disappointment for fans. That’s because the creators knew in advance that this would be the season finale, so purposefully steered the storyline to its natural conclusion.
Executive Producer Eli Roth later said “We are so grateful to the fans of Hemlock Grove who have championed the series so intensely over two seasons…We are looking forward to taking the last and final season into some dark and unexpected places, and to giving viewers the killer finale you’d come to expect from Hemlock Grove.”
Bloodline
After three unforgettable seasons, the Netflix producers made the tough decision to end the series Bloodline. Despite this, Cindy Holland, the President of Content at Netflix was still proud of the show and perhaps it was just the natural time for the story to come to an end.
In a statement to Variety, Cindy said “Bloodline’s season three will be the show’s final season…Together, with our collaborative partners at Sony Pictures Television, they created a seductive show that Netflix viewers worldwide love and continue to discover.”
Haters Back Off!
After just two seasons of the show Haters Back Off! which was created by popular YouTuber Miranda Sings, Netflix made the decision to cancel it.
However, since Miranda’s YouTube channel still boasts over five millions subscribers, it’s likely that she will continue a version of the show for her fans on own her channel in the future.
The Killing
Since its inception, The Killing has taken fans on a rocky roller-coaster ride. And we’re not even talking about the plot, it’s because the show was actually canceled not just one time, but two. It was first brought to life by the AMC production company, and then later revived by Netflix who produced more episodes. Now the show is reaching its third season, Netflix has decided to end the trilogy there.
Even though the show has come to its natural end, the producers are still satisfied that they have left fans with a proper conclusion. The showrunner, Veena Sud said: “After coming back from the dead twice, it absolutely feels like a victory lap, not only were we able to come back twice, but this final season is how I wanted to end the story of Sarah Linden from the very beginning.”
Lilyhammer
Lilyhammer was a popular show starring Steven Van Zandt who played a mob boss. After betraying his crew, he was forced to relocate to Norway and start a new life. However, due to business issues, the show was canceled by Netflix in 2015.
However, despite the series being canceled by Netflix, the company that owns the rights to the show have remained optimistic that perhaps a fourth season can be made in the future.
Netflix Presents: The Characters
The Characters had all the ingredients for a winner, by allowing a group of stand-up comedians to write and star in each episode. However, the show failed to pick up in the ratings, and after just one season it was canceled.
Nonetheless, there are plenty of hilarious stand-up shows on Netflix, so you’ll still be able to get your stand-up fix.
Atelier
The show Atelier was in a niche category, and followed a young woman as she tried to succeed in the Japanese fashion industry. The Japanese drama centered around a fashion house named ‘Emotion’, in which the main character struggles to find her place.
However, according to Screenrant, the show failed to take off as it had hardly any marketing, so it was cancelled after the first season.
Hibana: Spark
Hibana: Spark was a series based on the novel Hibana which centered around stand-up comedian Tokunaga who embarks on an apprenticeship with an experienced comedian.
This is yet another international show which failed to launch on Netflix, so it was cut after the first season.
Longmire
The show Longmire focused on the life of a small-town sheriff in Wyoming, and actually spanned six seasons. It was an American western crime drama based on the novel series ‘Walt Longmire Mysteries’ written by Craig Johnson.
However, after running on Netflix for the first three seasons, the show suffered from low ratings and was ultimately canceled.
House of Cards
Although House of Cards was a huge hit with fans, the producers of the show decided to wrap it up after the sixth season. The show was actually filled with a little controversy after there were sexual assault allegations made against Kevin Spacey, so he won’t actually feature in the last season.
Ted Sarandos, the Netflix Content Chief said, “We are excited to bring closure to fans.”
Sense8
When Netflix decided to cut Sense8, it was already a huge hit with fans. So much so, that its fans started a campaign to protest its cancellation. Since the audience response was so heated, the producers at Netflix ultimately made the decision to bring it back. This wasn’t for good, but for an extended two-hour final episode.
That way they could give fans a season finale they needed. The creator of the show was very touched, and tweeted, “Your love has brought Sense8 back to life. (I could kiss every single one of you!)”.
Disjointed
Although the show Disjointed starred Kathy Bates, it sadly only lasted one season and was cut by Netflix in February 2018.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the show was not a firm favorite with viewers and only received a 23% critic approval rating.
The King Of Queens
Who didn’t fall in love with the stars of The King Of Queens? Kevin James teamed up with Leah Remini and Jerry Stiller put on a show that had us in stitches up until 2007.
Netflix got some fans pretty upset when they hinted that they would be streaming the hilarious show. It turns out that the day never came.
Gypsy
While Gypsy did have the ingredients for a winning series, the psychological thriller was cut after just one season.
This is probably down to the fact that it was very similar to another popular Netflix original series GLOW and they had to compete to target the same audience.
Love
Judd Apatow’s popular hit show Love was has sadly come to an end after three seasons. The show focused on the world of dating in a down-to-earth perspective.
While fans may be disappointed, Apatow tried to reassure everyone that they will get the closure they need, as “[Season 3 is] our sweetest, funniest season and ends our story in a beautiful way,”
Everything Sucks
The creators of the Coming-Of-Age drama Everything Sucks were just as disappointed as the fans to learn that the show wouldn’t be returning to Netflix for the next season.
In fact, Jeff Pinker, the Executive Producer of the show said, “We’re super proud of the show we made — and very proud that it found an audience of very passionate fans, for many of whom it became an important personal touchstone: either reflecting their current life, or an echo of their own teenage years. We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity, but are very disheartened we won’t be continuing to tell these stories”.
Lady Dynamite
After Maria Bamford’s autobiographical comedy series ran for two seasons, Netflix decided that they won’t be renewing the show.
Nevertheless, the creator of the show is still grateful for the opportunity and tweeted how “we didn’t get much but what we got was great in every way.”
Girlboss
Girlboss was inspired by the book of the same name and follows the story of the founder of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso. However, although the producers had high hopes for the show, it seems the viewership didn’t quite live up to their expectations.
In 2017 Netflix decided not to renew it for the next season. Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix said in a statement to Vanity Fair how shows can be canceled for numerous reasons, but it’s “mostly, it is how many people watch.”
Seven Seconds
In 2018 Netflix canceled the show Seven Seconds after just one season. Nevertheless, they were careful to ensure fans got the closure they needed as the show was only supposed to be a standalone story. The plot centered on the unexplained death of an African American boy, and audiences were gripped throughout.
The VP of Original Content at Netflix, Cindy Holland, said, “We loved working with Veena, Regina and the cast and crew of Seven Seconds. Together they created a compelling, timely and relevant crime drama. The first season is a complete, stand-alone story that we are proud to feature on Netflix for years to come.”
Marco Polo
Marco Polo was cut by Netflix after just two seasons. According to the NY Times, the reason it was canceled was probably down to the big budget needed for the show.
In fact, it was reported that the producers poured $180 million into making it, and the performance ratings didn’t quite live up to their expectations, so it was understandably canceled.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tina-Fey’s original series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been a huge hit that spanned four seasons. However, Netflix announced the show would be coming to an end in May 2018.
Nevertheless, the word on the grapevine is that there is a movie in the making, which can help fans get the closure they needed and help bring the show to a proper finale.
Chelsea
Fans may be surprised to learn that it was the star of the show, Chelsea Handler who chose not to continue with the series.
Chelsea later tweeted how “Like so many across the country, the last presidential election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me. From the national level down to the grassroots, it’s clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation. For these reasons, I’ve decided not to return for another season of ‘Chelsea,’ and instead devote as much time as I can to becoming a more knowledgeable and engaged citizen and to focus on projects that have significance to me.”

“take a break from the seriousness of late-night comedy” and “instead of making the news fun, she’ll make fun of everything and everybody. There will be no preaching or political agenda — unless it’s funny.”
However, the show was canceled after its first season.
A Series Of Unfortunate Events
A Series Of Unfortunate Events featured the talented Neil Patrick Harris, as Count Olaf. The story is based on the original books and Netflix brought the characters to life for three action-packed seasons. Since the show followed the books so closely, it came to a natural end after the third season.
Neil Patrick Harris, however, was satisfied with the shows’ ending and told TVLine. “We’re three seasons, all in. We’ve intentionally been very truthful and factual and loyal to the books.”
Voltron: Legendary Defender
After eight hit seasons, the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender will be coming to a close.

While Netflix has already released two seasons of the hit show Santa Clarita Diet. The show follows the lives of an average couple who go through a life-changing experience that leads them down “a road of death and destruction.”

Making A Murder
Making A Murder is a hugely successful documentary series that follows the questionable convictions of two men that were tried for murder.
Since audiences were gripped throughout, Netflix has planned a follow-up series. Although they have remained tight-lipped on the content of the next series, this will definitely be one to watch…

The End of the F***ing World
Thankfully for die-hard fans, it’s not The End of the F***ing World for this show just yet. Especially good as the Emmy-nominated British drama closed the second season with an ambiguous and heartbreaking ending.
