These Little Puppies That Are Rescued From The Drain Turned Out Not To Be Dogs

Published on 04/13/2020

On the day that the Colorado Spring Fire Department took a call from a distressed person, they rushed immediately towards their designated location. Once they reached their destination, they realized that it was going to be a rescue mission. When they secured the puppies and observed them, they realized that they weren’t regular pups.

Job Demands

When we heard of firefighters, we thought of them as the ones who put out fires, rushed towards burning buildings, and gave instructions to prevent fire. But firefighters had different tasks other than those mentioned, and it included helping those in dire need or saving lost or stuck animals.

Job Demands

Job Demands

Not Just Fires

The primary job of firefighters involved fire. This was not limited to putting out fires, but also how to prevent them in different situations. Their job included providing medical care when someone was hurt, inspecting the hazard and fireproofing of a building, and taking care of flammable materials that might be expired or defective.

Response Time

Speed was the key factor when they rushed towards the emergency location. The Colorado Spring Fire Department had a massive team available to respond to many different locations across the city. They boasted that they were the fastest team that could arrive 90% of the time within 8 minutes.

Equipment

At any minute, a fire could start in different locations at once. And each scene could be having different intensities of flames. For this reason, the Colorado Spring Fire Department gathered different equipment for every scenario. They currently had 11 brush trucks for wildland fires, 1 air supply truck, 1 hazardous-materials decontamination vehicle, and, last but not the least, 1 hose wagon.

Just A Normal Day

It was just a common day for the Colorado Spring Fire Department. They were just doing their everyday task. They maintained their vehicles, did check-ups, drank their coffees, and filed reports for their duties. The team didn’t know that this day would be an unforgettable moment for them.

A Call

The stillness of the day was broken because of a phone call. They dealt with the call and asked for more information about the emergency. They gathered more information about the request and learned that it was to rescue an animal that was in distress.

Precautions

Every knowledgeable animal researcher knew how dangerous an upset animal was. They had to be careful when the animal behaved violently. It might endanger their own life when the animal attacked them or struggled while being rescued. Others might hide because they are frightened. Firefighters understood the danger, that was why they needed to be careful in any animal rescue mission.

Precautions

Always Prepared

When rescuing an animal, firefighters would need to prepare their equipment depending on the situation and what creature they would rescue. Firefighters would not only rescue cats and dogs, but also untamed wild animals like wildcats, snakes, and many more.

No Worries

There wasn’t much concern about the safety of the litter of young puppies as the task at hand was not that difficult. After making sure that they brought the appropriate gear and equipment, the team went out from their vehicle and headed towards the location where the distress call was coming from.

Assessment

After they arrived at the scene, they quickly assessed the surroundings and the situation of the young puppies. The pups were trapped underneath a storm grate and they noticed that they were gathered in the same area. They thought that the whole situation wasn’t complicated at all, but once rain fell, there would be a chance that the puppies might drown.

The Clock Is Ticking

After they assessed everything in the area, they assumed that even if the rain did not continue to fall, they were still in danger because of the cold temperature inside the dark hole. The team understood the situation and figured out that they needed to act fast because it might endanger the life of those puppies.

Quick Thinking

They realized that the puppies were too small for them to escape on their own. They measured the depth of the sewer and luckily, they can save the puppies without a problem. They talked over the options that they had and decided that one or two firefighters could get the pups out of the sewer.

They lifted the heavy storm grate to remove the obstacle in their way. It was then that they clearly saw the puppies below the sewer. They were small and very young pups and they were trapped together inside the sewer.

The firefighters cannot find a way to get there, but something bothered them. They were curious about the pups’ parents, wondering whether they were in the area or had already abandoned them. But they decided to put the thought aside and proceeded to save them.

Abandoned

Even if they were left by their parents, they knew that they had to be cautious whether their parents were still in the area to just find some food for their young ones or if they really abandoned them. Some of the animals would be aggressive if you took their babies, and they understood that they must be careful or else it would put their life in danger.

A Difficult Situation

When they saw the puppies under the sewer, they were surprised that they were fine because of the garbage, dirt, and mud surrounding them. It was a terrible sight especially that the firefighters knew that there was no sunlight that could warm the place up. It was obvious that the place was cold, and they should make a move to rescue them.

The young pups’ lives were hanging on the line, so they had to act fast. If the mother had abandoned them, then they could easily save the pups and there would be no other issue. On the other hand, if the mother had planned to come back for her babies, she might be shocked to find them gone.

The team realized that the animals they were rescuing were not ordinary puppies. They felt uneasy that their parents might attack them in this dark place. This was one of the hardest situations that they ever had to face.

It was a deciding factor, whether they would leave the puppies here and hope that their parents would come for them or to just go ahead and save them. Either way, they were aware that the puppies were trapped inside this dark cold sewer.

They were not sure what breed of pups they were trying to rescue. They decided that they would save the puppy without fear of their parents and if human touch contaminated the pups, they would just have to bear responsibility for it.

The first step that the firefighter did was to equip themselves with gears to avoid contamination. They planned that, once they saved the puppies from the sewer, they would put them on the sheet next to the hole.

Upsetting

There were rumors that began to spread, and the most famous one was that other people tried to abandon their pets along the streets or in hidden places just to escape from their responsibilities. It was not an appropriate attitude for a human, but many people were still doing upsetting stuff like this.

It was one of the cold hard truths that other humans did this to flee from their obligations. It was difficult to comprehend how other people could do such wicked things to their pets. That was why firefighters were eager to help those animals who were in trouble.

Hopefully, this situation would make pet owners realize that abandoning pets is a sinful way of escaping from their responsibilities. Everyone should know that deserting your pet may be the easiest way out of their responsibility, but it was the most difficult case for the animal that was abandoned.

It was difficult to identify how many of these pups faced the same fate as the others. Luckily, the sewer was not deep enough and they easily pinpointed their location. All the puppies were rescued safely from the sewers.

A Sigh of Relief

The firefighters had thought that there were no people involved in this incident. It was because of the current that swept the puppies away and easily slipped inside the sewer. They were relieved that it was not humans who did it, but it was because of the rain and the current.

Mark pushed his telephone to make sure he understood what the vet was saying. The veterinarian reiterated himself to guarantee that Mark heard the words from his lips. The doctor said that the puppies they carried in were not really dogs. Mark didn’t know what it meant. What would they be if they were not dogs?

Mark listened carefully as the vet brought forth the words, “red foxes.” He was shocked. Everyone was confident they looked at a litter of puppies and not a small troop of foxes! It puzzled him even more, as they were not red at all. They tend to be a darker shade at birth however.

Returning

There was a twist to the story though. The vet said that it was quite possible that the mom was still in the field, perhaps even searching for her babies The idea was to put them back to where they were easily discovered so that the mother would not lose hope of finding them.

Foxes are not the only wild animal in Colorado that you can find. Snakes, bears, coyotes, deer and even mountain lions are bustling in the forest! These creatures are often seen by hikers, but they don’t encounter those that are more lethal. Even if they may seem docile, wild animals should be left on their own.

Dark And Cool

Why would the mother of the foxes put her cubs in a sewer grate if she wanted to build a shelter in a den? The experts think the mother saw this as a kind of imitation of a lair, supplying darkness and cool temperatures to her cubs.

When she picked her den, the mother fox may have been wrong to leave her babies behind. Although the sewer was dark and cold, its resemblance to typical fox dens were not adequate for the cubs to be a good place.

Wildlife Encounters

Experts recommend that people follow some basic guidelines to avoid conflict between all types of wild animals. The first is not to feed wild animals, even if they seem to be starving. Pet food ought not to be left outdoors. It is also important to ensure that any hole larger than 1⁄4 of an inch is filled with cement or anything else to minimize wildlife accessibility.
