The Discovery
John actually found some kind of hatch. He cleaned the area around it, and pried the lid open. He peered in carefully, making sure not to inhale a lot. It was possible there were toxic fumes or mold inside. What he saw amazed him.

Under the lid, John saw a spiral staircase leading downward. John was eager and had to know just where this would lead him, he could have jumped in right then and there but decided not to. Even though he was extremely excited, he hesitated and for good reason.
