Here Are Some Of The Trending Style Of The Past Decades You Wished They Never Existed

Published on 06/18/2020

Looking at the movies that were created in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, you would be able to see different styles of how people dressed up a long time ago. If you want to see other references, you may check other things that contain a lot of throwback pictures such as your parent’s old photo album. Seeing the fashion styles that were trending a few decades ago, you might be overwhelmed because of their fresh and unusual styles; however, some things just have to change. In today’s world, the fashion trend already evolved to a whole new level – and some of the fashion styles that used to trend in the 70s, 80s, and 90s are just not acceptable anymore. Let me remind you first that at the end of the day, it would still be your choice what to do and what to wear – no one can control your selection of clothing, especially if it is the one you are comfortable with. But if you would like to have some guidance about the things not included in today’s fashion trends, here are the old fashion styles, from head to toe, you should never try doing today.

Poofy, Big Hairdo

This hairstyle required a lot of things in order for it to be achieved. First, a lot of wax or hairspray had always been needed so that the hair would be big and poofy – this was really damaging to the hair. Also, a lot of time was needed to set your hair like this – in today’s world, would you really take a lot of time and effort just to do this hairstyle? I do not think so. It is simply better to try the latest minimal hairstyle trends or just let your hair the way it is.

Matchy-Matchy Outfits

Wearing a top that has the exact same color with your pants, shorts, or whatever you would be wearing as your bottom is not a trend anymore – it actually looks kind of funny. Trying to combine two different designs or colors would not hurt you in any way. Just make sure that the colors you would combine would be pleasing to look at.

High-Waters

High-water pants are kind of short and seeing how it does not cover one’s ankle is really awkward. Pants like this is not a trend you would want to try anymore. It would be way better to engage yourself in wearing pants that are long enough to cover your whole legs, including your ankle.

Screenshot 3

Over-Plucking/Tweezing

If you are the type of person who is fond of over-plucking his or her eyebrows, you might want to think again. Having a very thin eyebrow is not a trend in today’s world anymore. In fact, people are now falling in love with thick eyebrows. If you want to try it out, you do not need to do anything – just patiently wait and let your eyebrow hair grow!

No Skincare Routine

Looking back at the 70s, 80s, and 90s, only a few people were fond of having the thing we call “skincare routine”. Most of them just wanted their skin to glow the way it naturally does. Well, in today’s world, a lot of people are already doing extra efforts to take care of their skin – just like buying facial products that would really nurture the skin. Well, trying to take care of your own skin would not hurt at all.

Long Sleeves Only

Clothes that have long sleeves used to be really popular way back then. However, everything has already changed and it is not the go-to clothing anymore – especially to the people living in temperate countries. There is no harm in trying to wear simple shirts and sleeveless clothes!

Matching Lipstick And Dress

This one is for all the girls out there! If you are thinking of a style that would really captivate a lot of positive reactions, never try wearing lipstick that has the same color with your dress – besides, wearing lipstick that has a very bright color is not a trend anymore. Just pick a natural color of lipstick that would complement the color of what you are wearing and you are already good to go!

“Old Lady” Handbags

The old lady handbags we are talking about here are the huge handbags that people always used to carry around. Fashion has already evolved and lots of new bags are available at department stores. Instead of engaging yourself in using a big handbag, style yourself with cute and fancy handbags such as pouches.

Screenshot 12

Undergarment Lines

Extravagant undergarments used to be really popular before, but if you would try it today, you might want to consider some things. If you would choose to wear undergarments that would probably be exposed underneath your clothes because their designs are just too much, you would be making the wrong decision. Seeing your undergarments peeking out from your outer clothes is plain awkward.

Jersey Fabric

We all know the jersey fabric as the fabric that clings the most to the body. If you would wear clothes that have this kind of fabric, there is a high possibility that you would get irritated as time would pass by because it really clings to the body. If you want to avoid the irritation, try other kinds of fabric out!

Tan Stockings/Pantyhose

Wearing stockings does not matter at all. What really matters is the color you would be wearing. There are two colors of stockings that people usually wear – black and nude. These are the colors that we normally see being worn by people working in particular fields that require them to be presentable – sales, tourism, and the like. Back in the 70s, stockings that had a color darker than your natural skin tone used to be a fashion trend – but now, it is best to simply choose between black or nude.

Overdoing It With Powder

Before, people usually used a lot of powder as they covered their face with makeup. As years passed by, people working in the field of cosmetics came up with the idea to create more liquid and cream-based products. Since then, people have always liked those products more than they liked the powder-based ones.

Hiding Your Figure

People back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s had always loved to wear loose clothes – a loose shirt, loose pants, loose everything. As time passed by, a lot of things have changed in the fashion world. People started to see loose clothes as the type of clothing that makes a person look old and big. That is why if you are torn whether you should wear loose or tight clothes, it is more advisable to wear the latter. Be proud of your figure – you are perfect just the way you are!

Keeping The Same Hairdo

Let us commend all the people who have always been so consistent in the things they do. I have something to say to those who have been so consistent in keeping the same hairstyle through the years, though. Trying to play with different hairstyles would not hurt at all. Do not limit yourself with only one hairstyle. Think about this: what if there are more hairstyles that would actually suit you better?

Minis

If you already watched some films that were created during the 80s, you must have seen several female characters who wore minis that were so short – that was the fashion trend before. Some things have changed over the years. Now, the ladies are choosing to keep it simple, yet elegant by having the hem of their skirts reaching the knee level.

Pieces With A Story

People tend to keep a lot of things that really hold a very unforgettable memory. Nothing is wrong with clinging onto the sentimental values objects have, but if we would be talking about clothes, you might want to let go. If the clothes still look good, then keep on wearing them. If they are not that cute yet they have sentimental values, just keep them in your closet and do not try wearing them anymore.

Trendy Sunglasses

The sunglasses we are talking about here are the very dark ones with square frames. Yes, it was popular before, but some things already changed. People realized that the dark and square sunglasses expose some issues that could be found on the face such as wrinkles and eye bags. With that information, it would be better to use sunglasses with a lighter shade of lens.

Screenshot 21

Dark Lipstick

Lipsticks that have a dark color used to be a fashion trend a long time ago. With darker shades, the lines that are visible in the lips become more exposed. That is why people started to love lipsticks with lighter shades such as nude, baby pink, and the like. Besides, these colors look more natural compared to the darker shades.

Bad Color Choices

If you think that every person could wear any color of clothing, you are kind of wrong. The colors of the garments people wear play a huge part in making their outfits fashionable. First, the colors of your top and bottom should be going with each other – it should not be hard to look at. Another thing you should consider is choosing the color that is complementing your skin tone. Following these tips would surely make your outfit turn out great!

Not Showing Your Neck

People in the 70s, 80s, and 90s really loved wearing turtlenecks and matched them with different styles of pants. It was also their technique of hiding some issues that could be found in their neck such as wrinkles. Well, in today’s world, it would be a lot better if you would not cover your neck. Clothes with v-necks are the new trend.

Screenshot 24

All Black Everything

I think we can all agree that black is a very elegant color. However, you should not engage in wearing an all-black outfit. Yes, there are a few advantages of wearing black clothes – one of them is the fact that you appear slimmer in black clothes. Despite the advantages, it is still way better to match other colors with black. In fact, black looks good with any color, so try matching up your black clothes with other garments that have different colors.

Screenshot 25

Tweed

Tweed is a rough and woolen fabric that people loved to wear a long time ago. Aside from the fact that it is a type of fabric that is hot to wear, a tweed makes people look very old. Those are some of the reasons why people should not wear tweed anymore, especially in today’s world. Consider trying other designs and other types of fabric.

Screenshot 26

Resisting Denim

If you really like to look very fashionable, engage yourself in wearing denim. Instead of wearing other textiles that make you look old school and unfashionable, wear denim. This type of textile actually makes people look younger and more stylish.

Chunky Jewelry

A few decades ago, people, especially women, loved to wear huge and shiny jewelry such as bulky rings, necklaces, and the like. As years passed by, people started to be fond of minimal accessories that look simple and elegant at the same time. Remember, simplicity is beauty – avoid wearing extravagant accessories.

Screenshot 28

Stretchy Jeans

People used to be really fond of jeans that had an elasticity almost the same with leggings. Well, stretchy jeans are just not acceptable in today’s fashion trend anymore. Start wearing the standard jeans and save yourself from looking very lumpy because of the stretchy jeans that emphasize huge body parts.

Screenshot 29

Nothing Tight

If you really like to look fashionable, start letting go of the loose, baggy clothes in your closet and wear much tighter clothes. Loose clothes make people look older and bigger. On the other hand, tight clothes highlight the figure of a person’s body and make them look more stylish.

Screenshot 30

Chunky Sneakers

Bulky shoes used to be very popular a long time ago. After a few decades have passed, people began wearing smaller footwear. Maybe, they realized that bulky footwear makes people appear bigger and heavier. Another negative thing about bulky footwear is that it is kind of difficult to match an outfit with a pair of chunky sneakers. Those are the reasons why you should never choose wearing bulky sneakers.

Screenshot 31

Too Trendy

Another thing you should learn in order to make your outfits fashionable is to never wear or do a style that used to be trending years ago. It would just make you look kind of funny and out of place. Remember to stick to what is currently trending and popular in today’s fashion world.

Screenshot 32

Jacket Around The Waist

This is one of the most common issues in fashion. Wearing and tying a  jacket around your waist is cool if you are still living in the 90s. Now that a lot of fashion styles already evolved, having your jacket tied up around your waist does not look fashionable anymore. If you would come across a moment where you have a jacket, but you do not want to wear it anymore, try tying it over your shoulders, holding it, or simply keeping it inside your bag if you have one.

Screenshot 33

Tanning

Exposing yourself to direct sunlight so that your skin would get a little darker is just a big no. You should never do that because first of all, it brings a lot of harm to your skin. Even though tanning outdoors used to be a trend, always be wise in every decision you would make and do not consider doing it. Well, if you really want to make your skin tone darker, buy tanning products instead of exposing your skin outdoors.

Screenshot 34

Flowery Prints

People used to love everything floral – clothes, shoes, and accessories. Well, until now, people are still fond of giving their outfit a bit of floral. Take note that I said “a bit of floral” because if you would have floral all over your clothes, shoes, and accessories all at the same time, that would not be fashionable at all. Remember, too much of anything is bad.

Split Ends

Hairstyles that feature split ends used to be really popular back in the day. A lot of women, even men, did such a hairstyle. However, some things have changed and split ends are everything but stylish anymore. Just try other hairstyles and do your best to avoid having split ends.

Screenshot 36

Too Much Blush

This one is for all the people who use makeup to make themselves have a cute, little blush. There is nothing wrong with giving yourself a blush – what’s wrong is when you apply it on the wrong part of the face and when you end up putting on too much blush. Always remember to be careful in applying it because a single wrong move could ruin everything about your style.

Only Wearing Flats

This advice is dedicated to all the women out there who always loved the comfort of wearing flats. Yes, flats are very easy and comfortable to wear, but wouldn’t you like to bring your style up to a whole new level? Try wearing some heels and see how it would make you look a lot more stylish and chic.

Logos For All To See

Shirts and other clothes that are designed with a brand logo are minimal and cute at the same time. However, wearing it very often is just not fashionable. If you really like the brand, then support them by wearing other clothes that they designed, not the clothes that have its logo.

Screenshot 39

Long Skirts

I know that I mentioned not wearing short skirts earlier, so you may now be confused because I would also not recommend wearing long skirts. To make everything clear, all that I am trying to say is that wear a skirt that has medium length and a skirt that would emphasize your body proportion well.

Screenshot 40

Slouchy And Slouchy

You should never wear a loose top and a loose bottom at the same time. The same thing goes with tight clothes – never wear tight tops and tight bottoms at the same time. That style is just not fashionable at all whatever angle you would look at it from.

Not Showing Your Waist

This is another tip featuring loose and baggy clothes. Start wearing clothes that emphasize the figure of your body to make your outfit look more stylish and fashionable. If you could not let go of all the loose clothes that you have, I suggest that you should wear a belt – in that way, your waist would be more emphasized.

Heavy Black Eye Makeup

Wearing thick and black makeup around your eyes used to be a trend in the 80s. It gave off a rockstar vibe and it used to be really cool. In today’s world, however, the heavy black eye makeup does not look fashionable anymore. In fact, it just exposes a lot of issues that could be found around the eyes such as wrinkles and eye bags.

If you have a problem with your eyesight, take the time to choose what kind of eyeglasses you are going to use. Do not simply go with any glasses available at the eye clinic – choose the eyeglasses that have a bigger frame so that your face would look more emphasized. Having an eyesight problem does not mean you have to stop being stylish after all.

It is not that advisable to wear bulky heels all the time because they are the kind of footwear that makes a person appear heavier and bigger. The footwear that does the exact opposite is smaller and sleeker heels. Besides, lighter heels look way more fashionable compared to the chunkier ones.

Silk Scarves

Women in the 80s loved to wear stylish silk scarves. However, after the years passed by and the fashion trends evolved, silk scarves ended up being not that stylish anymore. If you are wearing a neck scarf just because you wanted to cover an issue on your neck, that is a wrong move because it would just bring more attention to the mentioned body part. Another negative thing about silk neck scarves is the fact that they make the upper bodies of the people wearing them appear so heavy. Those are some of the reasons why you should never wear neck scarves today.

Pearls

In addition to all the chunky jewelry that people used to love in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, people used to be so fond of using pearls. Jean sets used to be really trendy back in the day. People in the 80s loved the matching black denim tops and bottoms. However, as years passed by, the matching denim became less stylish. Now, people are taking one of the jean sets and they usually match them with other types of clothes.

This is one of the things people should really avoid if they do not like other people to make fun of them. Also, make sure to use the colors that match and are complementing with your skin tone.

If you are a huge fan of glitters, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you do not use it too much. A bit of glitter would be a perfect addition to your outfit, just make sure that you use it wisely and moderately. On the other hand, if you are not that fond of glitters, it would be better if you do not use it at all.

Blue Eyeshadow

Blue is a really critical color to use for eyeshadow. That is why I encourage you to avoid using the mentioned color as much as you can because first of all, blue eyeshadow could make a person look older. So if I were you, I would look for other lighter colors to make my makeup look more stylish.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to have lips that look much bigger. However, if you overdraw your lips using lipstick and other cosmetic products, your makeup would be easily ruined.
