Emily fought the want to either cry uncontrollably or flee the embarrassment. But she soon saw that it would only get worse if she gave Derek the response he appeared to desire. She was unable to show him how much he had wounded her. It was then that Emily decided. She refused to allow Derek’s brutality to finish with her as the victim. She wasn’t going to react the way he or anybody else had anticipated, but she was determined to answer.

Emily was compelled to confront the man who laughed or even call Derek out out there after she made the decision to not allow his nastiness to prevail. However, she secretly realized it would not actually resolve the issue. She desired for her return to have greater significance and be something Derek couldn’t dismiss. Without losing herself in rage, she wanted to be sure that whatever she did next would strike him where it hurt the most.
