Lauren was obviously very spoilt from the first time I met her. I made an effort not to criticize her, but I couldn’t get rid of the suspicion that she may be seeing Jason only to get his money. Nevertheless, I knew Jason liked the girl, and she had a sensitive side. When they announced their engagement, I was delighted for them, but I should have anticipated that Lauren would insist that we cover the full cost. She had no idea that I had a strategy, so I remained composed and seemed to agree. I would ensure that her wedding was a memorable day for the rest of her life, and not in the way she had anticipated. She would wish she had never asked when she eventually learned what I was up to.

I pretended that everything was going perfectly while the wedding preparations went on. It wasn’t the strategy Lauren had in mind, but it was.
