Poverty Situation
Marie Bernarde Soubirous, better known as Saint Bernadette, was born in Paris, France, on January 7, 1844. She was born in the French town of Lourdes, among the Pyrenees mountains, where she grew up with her eight brothers and sisters. In addition to her mother’s laundry maid job, Bernadette’s father, François worked as a mill worker in the family’s factory. There is also no doubt that the family was experiencing some financial difficulties at the time.
Sickness Pervades
For her part, Bernadette suffered from illness on top of her plight as a result of her poverty. According to others, the Frenchwoman was never taller than 4 feet and 7 inches, which may explain her short stature. Bernardette was born with serious breathing problems due to cholera contracted as a kid. She continued to suffer from them for the remainder of her life.
