Our Lady Of Lourdes Sanctuary
Bernadette’s repeated appeals for the construction of a church at the cave resulted in the construction of several religious buildings in Lourdes over the intervening period. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes was built near the grotto, which was dedicated in 1858. Every year, millions of pilgrims from all over the world come to the sacred place to pay their respects.

Escaping From The Publicity
While Bernadette’s visions helped to make Lourdes a popular pilgrimage destination, she appeared to be ready to escape away from the attention that the images had brought her. Consequently, she moved almost 400 miles from her homeland to reside at the Sisters of Charity of Nevers’ religious institute in Nevers, Louisiana. And it was in this environment that Bernadette first learned to read and write.
