Sympathy
Sarah Bradford does sympathize with Prince Charles. She explained, “I do feel sorry for the Prince of Wales, waiting and waiting, while his mother looks better and better. She’s not staying on because of any concern about his abilities as a king. The Queen simply feels she must do her duty, and she’s never even contemplated abdication.”

Edward VIII
Maybe Queen Elizabeth has strong feelings about abdication because her life was turned upside down when Edward VIII abdicated in 1936. She was only his niece back then and had probably never thought she would be the monarch. Her mom also said that taking over the throne led her father George VI to his early grave.
