Teacher’s Clothing Almost Got Her Fired Because Of How Often She Wore It

Published on 01/22/2021

Her students were not the only ones beginning to notice. She would hear whispers in the hallways and during classes. Wherever she went, she felt as if she was being eyeballed. “Is she still wearing that dress?” She’d heard of what the girls have said about her. The question would come any day now, and she would have to explain herself. So far, she had never expected that this would be a snowball and that people from around the world would soon ask the same question. But they were all taken aback when they heard her answer. What could it possibly be about?

Proper Uniform

In school, as a teacher, you have to show up wearing proper clothes. Some schools have teachers’ uniforms, but some do not. And that means that every day, teachers should prepare different outfits in advance. For a while, Julia was a teacher and always made her dress beautifully accessorized. She loved colorful clothes and interesting outfits as an art instructor. But for the first day, her school outfit was quite bizarre…

Planning Her Outfit

Julia Mooney, 34, had just accepted a new post as an art teacher at Moorestown, New Jersey’s William Allen Middle School, and planned to dress for the occasion. But this dress would soon spark such controversy that her story caused a worldwide stir. With an outfit, what might be wrong? Julia had no idea just how much she would impress everyone when she bought that dress!

The Outfit

A great deal of excitement came with the new job, but her night-before jitters were worse than usual. She knew all the eyes would be on her with the brand new students and colleagues. What she did not know was that the school would be talking about her dress. They all gossiped about it, and before Julia finally talked about it, there was nothing she could do but accept her fate…

Finding The Dress

Julia saw the dress online and understood that it was necessary to have it for her. However, on the first day of school, nobody expected to see her wear this dress. Soon enough, this new art teacher was going to attract so much attention that she would even get fired if she did not explain herself!

Who Is She?

If you’re wondering who Julia Mooney is, then you should know that she’s not just an art teacher in middle school, but a mom of two, too. She is a resident of New Jersey and teaches at Moorestown’s William Allen Middle School. But her choices in her lifestyle are not exactly what you’d consider normal…

A Family Woman

Julia is fond of spending as much time with her family as possible. She takes them out and teaches them about animals on farms, and she also likes to knit clothes. They went to an alpaca farm on one of their journeys, and she was given some wool. She also trains her children to do gardening and other skills that will be useful in the future. However, things at the new school were a bit different. Here’s how things all began…

Minding Her Own Business

Mooney knew she would get some odd answers from the new school, but she never felt she would be so self-conscious about her dress. Mooney said, “I don’t really usually think of myself as somebody who really cares that much [about] what people think.” But things were about to get different!

A Perfect Fit

She was on her way after getting her two toddlers ready for kindergarten. Her new dress perfectly suited her, and she was delighted with her purchase, which was not inexpensive at $50. Although this was not necessarily the prettiest dress she could buy, she needed to reach her goal. Her first day at school, however, was nearly a disaster!

A Hot Day

Julia felt hopeful as well. Since she presented herself tentatively to her pupils in the 6th and 7th grade, she felt like everything was going swimming… That is before the temperature begins to rise outside. Julia put herself under the air conditioning unit strategically, but she did not feel any cooler than that. Her skin was beginning to flush, and she realized, “Oh no… I’m sweating! The horror!”

It Was Getting Hotter

She tried to remain on the course even when embarrassed, fanning herself with a book. All she could think of, however, was the summer sun that had crept slowly past the 90-degree mark. Hours passed, and it felt like the day was endless. Julia felt like she wasn’t making a good impression that day, while the students were thrilled to meet the new art educators.

The Rest Of The Day

The classes felt endless after a long stream of introductions! There was a new opportunity for every 13-year-old who walked through the doors to meet her to make an impression, and she felt like she was losing it. Finally, the day was over; she returned, relieved, to her car. She was mortified to feel her dress sticking up like a damp cheesecloth against her back. She told herself that at least tomorrow would be a new day, as she gently scrubbed it in the sink and hung it up to dry.

The Next Day

That was just the start! Some of the pupils realized that she was not like their other teachers when Mrs. Mooney arrived at school the next morning. The art teacher was wearing the same outfit as the previous day, some of her students discovered. There was another day, and it became obvious that people were beginning to talk about it.

They Were Talking About Her

Even though for the first few days, others were not receptive, everyone recognized it soon enough. With the art teacher, was there something wrong? Nobody could understand why the new instructor did not change her outfit. One of the students noticed that she had changed her boots, and she added a scarf.

She Wore It Everywhere

At 13, girls are increasingly aware of their appearance, coveting trendy pieces and designer labels, and their clothes. So, it was no wonder some of the girls instantly noticed Mrs. Mooney. When you see why Julia wore the same dress as the days went by, you’ll be surprised. She wore that dress at school and whenever she was in town and during the weekends!

Why She Wore The Dress

It was only a matter of time before anyone had said it, Julia knew, although no one had asked her what the explanation was for her decision. Julia knew that when individuals had the trust to express their fears about her unchanging dress, she would have to answer many questions. Will she be in trouble in this new workplace?

Didn’t She Have Other Clothes?

Soon, Julia became the topic of the William Allen Middle School talk. Every day of the week, she wore her gray dress, and people could not turn their attention away from it. The speculation started flying. There was concern about some of the teachers. Has Mrs. Mooney faced difficulties? Students, too, started wondering. But, as every high school student knows, teenagers may be ruthless.

The Elephant In The Room

Julia continued teaching as she avoided the elephant in the room. The snickers and whispers in the halls and the playground were known to her. And her colleagues had begun to see her differently and treated her as if she were frail, but on her wardrobe, they refused to question her explicitly. She knew she had to ride it out, though. She was prepared to stay out of the race. So she knew the best way was to put her head down.

Following The Rules

The comments around her were, as you can all imagine, whether Julia was not a bit too strange to be a teacher and was her behavior affecting the kids? The principal even spoke to some of the parents, proposing a meeting. Was Julia going to be fired each day for wearing the same dress? She did not even break any rules.

Was She Struggling?

Did the new teacher struggle with money? No matter how poor you are, you can’t possibly own just one dress. Plus, from time to time, Julia arrived wearing various shoes and scarves. She also had numerous sweaters and other items for her art class, including aprons. So, what exactly was the tale behind the grey dress? They were all curious, and it was unable to last forever. Or so they thought.

Others Were Bothered By It

Many people were simply driven nuts by her never-changing dress. Others felt Julia’s lifestyle was repugnant. Among the numerous opinions, most assumed that wearing the same grey dress was boring for an art teacher. But there were a few reasons to wear this outfit for Julia. Until the mystery is solved, parents are surprised to learn the truth about their children’s teachers!

Addressing The Question

People could no longer contain their excitement by the end of Julia’s third week. On all of their faces, she could see the problem. And she knew the time had come for this to be addressed. But what was that gray dress story about? And why wouldn’t she take it off, Julia? Everybody was dying to listen by now.

Still Wearing The Dress

You see, Julia had a smart strategy up her sleeve. It was all carefully arranged, and she had chosen a simple grey dress for some reason. “I’m walking down the halls, and they’re like, ‘Is she still wearing that dress?’” Julia said. Regardless, she could not help but smile as more and more people took notice.

Her Plan

The teacher explained, “I needed to pick a dress that was going to be versatile because I’m going to be wearing it through the winter, and when we started the school year, it was 90 degrees.” She led her students to her Instagram page when they finally gathered the courage to ask her why she had been wearing the same dress for weeks. Her Instagram feed held all of the answers.

An Outfit For A Hundred Days

Her Instagram page featured a post called One Outfit 100 Days, which reads, “For at least 100 days I’ll be wearing this dress, through ceramics projects, blizzards, whatever. Boring? Sure. I love to express myself through what I wear as much as the next American. This is a challenge.” But still, why would somebody do anything as boring as that? Well, she has four excellent reasons.

An Outfit For A Hundred Days

Minimalistic Lifestyle

The first explanation of why Julia chose to spend 100 days wearing the same dress is simple. Time-saving is it. A minimalist lifestyle makes sense since she had to look after two toddlers. She had more spare time with her loved ones as she enjoyed saying goodbye to the severe problem of what to wear. However, her reasons don’t stop there. For consumers everywhere, she has a far deeper message.

Minimalistic Lifestyle

Minimalistic Lifestyle

Slow Fashion

Julia is an active supporter of slow-fashion. What is ‘quick fashion,’ then? Literally, ‘fast fashion’ is cheap, fashionable fabric and cost-effective clothing, but it doesn’t last long, unfortunately. Forever 21 is an example. Julia explained, “We demand lots of clothes cheap, so retailers have to produce in foreign factories where US labor laws don’t protect workers.” ‘Slow fashion’ is just the opposite — promoting good quality and fair labor practices.

Workers’ Rights

Many companies unethically hire underage workers to meet the growing demand for cheaper products since large quantities of clothing are manufactured abroad. Worse still, no regulations are in place to protect these kids. Julia helps decrease the desire for cheaper work by purchasing less clothing. While the principal reason is Julia’s decision, it is not the only one.

Carbon Footprints

Julia is eager to be a conscious customer, and she is fighting the fashion industry’s environmental effects. With clothing consumption at an all-time global high, it is no wonder that unsustainable environmental policies are depleting the precious resources of the earth. By choosing a fair-trade hemp dress from a London-based clothing company named ‘Thought, Julia avoided contributing to her carbon footprint. So how did people react to Julia’s project?

Negative Reactions

Disgust is the most common reaction she has received. Some individuals just think that every day wearing the same clothing item is not hygienic. And her reply is food for thought. Julia replied by saying to them, “I just tell them: this is not a project about hygiene. I wash it as needed. I come to work clean. Lots of people wear uniforms, and they are not assumed to be dirty.” Julia’s 100-day challenge with one outfit has another thought-provoking takeaway.

Food For Thought

“Do we need so many new outfits? Are we just perpetuating a culture that defines us based on what we’re wearing rather than what we’re doing? What if we spent our energy trying to BE good, interesting humans instead of trying to LOOK good and interesting?” The letter from the teacher stunned people around the world, as they supported her statement.

Having Supporters

On Julia’s Instagram, comments quickly blew up, and she gained over 6,500 followers. A fan even wrote, “All for integrating sustainable strategies into everyday items, what a movement this teacher started!” Some of Julia’s students and peers soon followed her example, with 17 teachers joining her cause, including her husband, Patrick, a history teacher, who also wore the same shirt for 100 days. Local news stations quickly caught wind of the teacher’s story.

Staying The Course

“Some people will not want to listen and prefer their own rationalized [sic] conclusions. Respect that we are all riding on very different journeys through life. Stay friends while you stay the course.” She added that she realized that hemp is the “ultimate rockstar fiber” and that all dresses need “deep pockets.”

Buying Responsibly

Everyone was challenged by Julia when she said, “The challenge I’m presenting is this: Let’s think before we buy, wear, discard, and buy again. Can we buy used clothes? Buy responsibly? Buy LESS? Learn to sew a few things? Do we need so many new outfits? Are we just perpetuating a culture that defines us based on what we’re wearing rather than what we’re doing?”

After The Challenge

On her Instagram feed, Julie gives even more food for thought: “When this is over, I’ll change more often, but it won’t consume me like it once did. I’ll shop, but I’ll do so mindfully. I’ll have less, but not to this extreme. We shouldn’t let our inability to do everything stop us from doing what we can.”

Finishing The Challenge

Julia’s challenge came to an end on February 13, 2019, and she posted a photo of fellow teachers and school staff she is working on wearing the same clothes as her in the final three days as a sign of unity. The caption said: “Turns out I work with a pretty cool staff. Here’s a shot of 17 teachers just in my building who chose to support this project by wearing the same thing for these past three days. Great way to end #OneOutfit100days on #day100.”

Dealing With Criticism

She celebrated the end of her challenge by using parts of the dress to create new ones and detailing what she’d taken away from the project. Said the teacher, “In the face of criticism, petty or otherwise, constantly challenge yourself to respond with equal parts grace and hard evidence. Never get defensive.”

Mending

She continued, “Who mends clothes anymore? With clothes so cheap and nearly disposable, it doesn’t seem worth our time … So much so that this is a lost art. Maybe we should reconsider this. Maybe it’s worth fixing our clothes, so they continue to serve us. Maybe if we spent more on durable, ethically produced clothes, we’d value them more and be more motivated to fix them. Seems like a better option than the landfills.”

Challenging Everyone

Julia told everyone in an interview, “I like to wear clothes; I like to express myself… I know that we are all looking at what the other person is wearing,” she continued, “To wear the same thing every day is uncomfortable because we have this deeply ingrained cultural expectation to change every day. It’s weird, but because it’s weird, it’s making us all think.” What do you believe about the cause of Julia? Could you take up the challenge and wear the same outfit for 100 days?

Elizabeth McCarthy

This challenge was also taken on by Elizabeth McCarthy, only somewhat differently. She appeared in an in-depth video interview instead of wearing the same dress for 100 consecutive days. There, she explained how she did it and how, if they wanted to, others could do the same. Elizabeth was keen to become more aware of what she wore and just how often she wore it, just like Julia. For the environment, it was all about being better.

One Piece

Instead of buying new clothes, she wanted to get the most out of a single clothing piece that she already had in her closet: one dress. For 100 days in a row, she challenged herself to wear this dress. She carefully thought about which dress to use when she started the challenge. For this experiment, it needed to be versatile enough to work. The fabric of the dress was crucial to the success of the challenge. How was she doing that?

Simple Dress

Elizabeth chose a simple tank dress to start with, which she bought from a brand named Wool&. It was possible to wear this dress in many different ways: like a V-neck, with a belt, like a crew neck, and more. The fabric dried quickly, so it would be ready to wear the very next morning when she washed it. It was made of 49% ultrasoft merino wool, 33% Tencel™ lyocell, and 18% nylon. Due to this special blend, it’s a good choice for any season.

All Seasons

This dress will be great to wear in the summer, and you can easily wear it layered with other clothes in the winter. The best part is that, of course, it is very durable. It was still as good as new after Elizabeth wore the dress for the duration of the challenge! The project began initially when Wool& started an initiative with a campaign of its own, challenging women for 100 days in a row to wear one dress. All you had to do was say so to participate in the challenge. The brand would then send the first 50 volunteers a dress.

Smooth Sailing

Incredibly, the challenge continued smoothly. Among those who participated in this unbelievable challenge was Elizabeth. The challenge’s sole objective was to encourage these women to consume less and satisfy themselves with what they already own. As Julia stated earlier, consumerism is a big problem nowadays. Everyone loves adding new items and finding new clothes to wear to their lists. It’s part of the norm for today. We’ve learned what the cost of that lifestyle is, though.

Smooth Sailing

A High Price

It makes sense that there’s a very high price for living in a consumerist society. Something must be done about the matter, like Elizabeth, Julia, and many others realized. For things to get better, things need to change. Or rather, to begin to improve. What could be done to create change is the main question? Finding a different way of doing stuff is the first thing to do. That is what the challenge here was about. These women wanted to prove to everybody else a point.

Long Travels

Elizabeth enjoyed wearing her dress as the challenge progressed. Apart from that, the whole time she did it, she was traveling! In all kinds of circumstances and locations, she was wearing the same dress. From hiking to urban walking and roaming. All in the same clothes. Through this challenge, there was one thing she realized: “I definitely realized I don’t need as many things as I have or sometimes it feels like I need,” she said.

The Ultimate Comfort

It looks like Elizabeth didn’t mind wearing the same dress every day. Quite the contrary. She loved it! “I had plenty of options for cold weather, but I’m so happy in the summer. It’s really, really comfortable.” If you’re not one who wants to start a challenge like this and wear 100 days of the same dress, you might be looking for a more minimal wardrobe to build. This dress was just the thing for it, according to Elizabeth.

A Minimal Wardrobe

“If you’re thinking about ways to build a more minimal wardrobe, the Avery Tank Dress from Wool& provides both versatility and durability across the seasons. In a time where sustainability and waste is a hot topic, the ability to get more value and use from the items you own is of the utmost importance.” On her blog, Elizabeth explained. In addition to receiving a free dress when participating in the challenge, you get a $100 voucher to buy your next dress from them when you wear a Wool & Dress for 100 consecutive days!

Washing

You’re probably wondering about washing your dress if you’re like us. Don’t you need to wash it constantly when wearing the same dress 100 days in a row? It turns out that, no, there’s no need for you. Since the dress is mostly made of real wool, Elizabeth’s dress is remarkably odor-resistant. The amount of washing is up to the wearer and depends on their own needs and preferences to answer the question. Here are great reasons to buy a dress like Elizabeth’s, if you don’t already know.

Wool Care

Wool needs less to be washed, as we said. In the long run, this in itself will save you a lot of time and money. Purchasing a good basic dress means you’re going to have many different ways to wear it. If that’s not your thing, you do not have to go to the extreme and wear it for 100 days, but you can make the most of it by wearing it in different ways. This will save you down the line from buying multiple garments. You will find, not to mention, that you do not need more.
