At the age of 16, Nicole began to notice tiny bumps on her skin. It started happening in small spots but then spread to the rest of her body. She went to the doctor when she began to experience fatigue, fever, and jaundiced eyes. The doctor took a blood sample and learned that her platelets were dangerously low! On average, one should have 140,000 to 150,000 blood platelets. She had only 8,000.
A Dangerous Autoimmune Disease
After the checkup, she was diagnosed with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or TTP for short. It was a possibly fatal autoimmune disease. They were shocked to hear about the condition of this young girl. The condition could lead to the formation of blood clots all over her body. She needed to stay in the hospital for recovery afterward. Luckily, they figured it out just in time!
