Our world is filled with conflicts due to expenses and financial factors. “When I was climbing the ranks in figure skating, there were many times when my parents looked at us saying, ‘Well we can’t afford new skates, and there might be a possibility that you have to quit skating’.” Michelle said as she remembers the time her parents were struggling.

Just like any parents, Danny and Estella wished they were able to provide everything their kids desired. After all, they immigrated to America for the very reason that they want to make sure that their kids would have a better future.

However, the reality of Michelle’s parents, as well as other immigrants was that it was difficult to make ends meet, making them financially unstable. In general, sports are very expensive, especially skating. The sport is very expensive, even more so in the level Michelle was competing.

For any young person, realizing that you may have to give up on your dream could be quite stressful and can cause a lot of stress. With nothing but pure dedication to her dream, she would always spend her spare time on the ice as much as she possibly can. The Kwan siblings would all wake up in the morning, even as early as four! Why? To head to the rink and have a practice before heading to school. Just like what they did before going to school, they would also head right back into the rink after school to practice.

However, everything related to the sport heavily put a dent in their bank account. The rink rental fees, lesson fees, supplies, and outfits, the Kwan parents gave everything they could and sacrificed a lot to support their child’s love for the sport.

The Kwan’s sacrificed a lot and with pure happiness and love for seeing their child to become successful and enjoy doing what they love. These loving parents would do anything they could, from hand-sewing costumes to working an extra shift or job, it didn’t matter to them as long as they meet the necessary requirements.

After about 3-4 years hard work and practice, Michelle Kwan had started to become noticed by the people around her and was building her reputation within the figure skating community. Kwan reminisced her preteen anxieties and said, “At 12 years old, I was at the senior level, almost making it, and you know, so close to having my dreams come true.”

Kwan went on to say, “I ended up 2nd place in the ’94 championships, but at 12-years old, I almost quit.” She was doing well in competitions, but she noticed that her family was having a hard time to keep up with financial demands. Aside from the financial pressure that Michelle felt, she also had other issues during her time as a professional athlete.

In 1992, the momentum started as she had journeyed her way to World Junior Figure Skating Championship in 1994, which is where she received her first title. After a year, she went back to the United States Championship for figure skating, landing in second place.

However, this wasn’t the case for Kwan, as while she rose to prominence kept winning titles, her isolation did too, and she felt alone when it came to having friends.

In an interview she did with Cosmopolitan, Michelle stated “I was improving in the sport at age 10, 11 when I was getting my triple jumps — and it was suddenly very isolating, I was doing really well in competitions and it felt strange because people that were my friends became almost jealous.”

She was always by Michelle’s side no matter what her daughter may be needing, whether it was for making Michelle’s costumes, sharing advice, motivating and encouraging her or just providing a shoulder to cry on, the loving mother was always right by her side in every step that she took.

Feeling isolated from her friends and having a hard time when it comes to social life by the same time that the ’98 Olympics came around, Kwan felt terrible, especially with the press starting to make things worse. They made up a press rivalry against Tara Lipinski, a fellow figure skating champion in America at the time.
