I initially thought my husband was overreacting—did we really need to sell Jason’s car, the one he had worked so hard for, just because of a few bad grades? But my husband was firm, believing it was the only way Jason would understand that school needed to come first. Neither of us could have anticipated how he would react. What he did next completely shattered our understanding of him, leaving us blindsided and unaware of just how much worse things were about to get.

“What did you do?!” Jason yelled when Adam told him he had sold the car. “Listen, son, it’s for your own good—” Adam started to explain, but Jason cut him off, storming off to his room and slamming the door so violently that the windows rattled. Although it was obvious he was furious, we had no idea just how much worse things were about to become.
