A Seattle Start

Patrick was born in Philip, South Dakota, and attended an all-boys high school in Seattle, Washington, where he showed an early interest in sports. Patrick enrolled in Seattle University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program after graduating from high school. Patrick didn’t show much aptitude for the program at first, dropping out to reenter shortly after leaving to join the military as an officer.

The Beginning

Patrick was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps after reentering the program. Patrick served for two years in West Berlin, after which he became the Motor Pool officer of a West Berlin hospital. Patrick progressed through the ranks, eventually becoming Detachment Commander and then graduating from the US Army School of Aviation. He was deployed to Vietnam shortly after a successful start to his military career.
