Hands clenched
My palms tightened into fists beneath the table. Sandra’s remarks felt like daggers, and the laughter from everyone at the table just made them feel more so. My fiancé was too preoccupied talking to his brothers to give me the assistance I needed. It became painfully obvious that I was fighting Sandra’s constant taunts alone with each fake smile and courteous nod.

Hands Clenched
Marginalized and mocked
I had obviously been invited, only to be shunned and made fun of. It seemed like the whole evening was planned to draw attention to my weaknesses and fears. The environment remained tense due to Sandra’s cold demeanor and scathing remarks. I searched for an ally, but all I found were uninterested faces. Sandra seemed to be followed by my fiancé’s family, who implicitly supported her sarcasm. I felt uncomfortable and undervalued, like an outsider looking in.
