Inattentive fiancé
My fiancé continued to talk to his siblings despite Sandra’s insults. I was annoyed by his lack of awareness, but I couldn’t afford to become distracted. “So, how do you feel about the décor?” With a firm voice, I questioned Sandra. She looked down her nose at me and sniffed. “I guess it’s okay,” she remarked dismissively. Unaware of or reluctant to acknowledge the tension at the table, my fiancé shared a chuckle with his siblings. I understood that I was fighting this war alone.

Feeling excluded
With every second that went by, I felt more excluded as the nephews at the far end of the table laughed and joked, just like the grownups did. In an attempt to close the distance, I said out loud, “I remember when I had to sit at the kids’ table.” However, my words were ignored. Sandra looked at me coldly once again, her eyes full of censure. I was obviously not supposed to be here.
