A Frustrated Threat
Mike was so frustrated that he felt compelled to express his mounting skepticism about the hospital’s openness. He tried to maintain a level voice as he said, “You know, if there’s something I need to know, I might just have to call the police.” The doctor’s countenance changed slightly as he looked up. Mike felt he had no other option, even though he detested using threats. He could no longer be left in the dark.

Mike’s threat was kindly rejected by the doctor. “That won’t be required. He responded dismissively, which further increased Mike’s suspicions. “We’re just doing everything for patient safety.” The doctor’s casual manner wasn’t reassuring; something wasn’t right. Mike thought it was concerning that he didn’t have certain answers. He was more certain than ever that they were keeping something from him. He was aware that he had to be alert.
