In an attempt to win over the obstinate Annie, Thad’s mother prepared a lasagna one evening using a treasured recipe from her grandmother’s collection. Annie’s reaction did not change despite the delicious aroma filling the flat; she declined the food and left her dish unfinished. As Thad saw Annie consistently ignore his mother’s labors, his annoyance and rage increased. The indifference was emotionally draining him, and he knew it was time to confront Annie about the problem.

At last, Thad worked up the guts to confront Annie’s actions. He gently tried to ascertain her motivations in the hopes of finding an explanation and a solution. With the cozy scent of his mother’s cooking filling the air, they sat at their modest kitchen table. The uncomfortable situation was made more comfortable by the food that was still on the table between them. Thad’s eyes landed on Annie as the aromas of familiar herbs and spices filled the air. She sat with her eyes downcast, using a fork to absently prod at her food. The scents that had once been pleasant now seemed to emphasize their emotional separation.
