Talk To Her
Thad was worried since she was showing more and more resistance to eating his mother’s food. Annie looked up, her eyes catching Thad’s, but she quickly averted her gaze. “Annie,” he said softly, reaching out to grasp her hand, “is everything okay? You haven’t really touched your food.” She answered, “I’m just not very hungry,” in a voice that was hardly larger than a whisper. Her response seemed evasive, like a thin veil concealing something deeper. “But you used to love my mom’s cooking,” Thad added, increasing his level of concern. “You always said her dishes reminded you of home.”

Annie paused, the napkin on her lap causing her fingers to fidget. Thad experienced a twinge of perplexity and annoyance and said, “I know, Thad. It’s just… I’ve been feeling a bit off lately.” He had just been duped by his wife. He continued, “Annie, I’ve given you everything you’ve wanted,” with a hint of hurt in his voice. There was clearly a problem. “I’ve supported you, loved you unconditionally. Why can’t you just be honest with me?” He had received the confirmation just now.
