Who would not love pizza? A few people may not find pizza as something they are fond of eating often. However, for some people, it is indeed their go-to meal any time of the day. Some people love it so much that they eat it almost every day; they always include it as part of their day. Kix Alexander, a man who is residing in Salem, Oregon, is also a pizza enthusiast. He loves Domino’s Pizza! He’s been going there for about ten years already, and the staff knew him very well. One day, he just stopped coming.

It was in the year 1950 when pizza was becoming more popular and widely eaten food amongst American citizens. It was starting to be a famous food that most people living in the United States would eat and it wasn’t just because of the hype. Americans truly love it very much. It was even recorded that the pizza parlors in the United States of America were able to sell 3 billion pizzas. If you ask us, it is indeed quite a large number compared to other food that’s being sold in the market.

At that time, Sarah Fuller was working at Domino’s Pizza as the manager. She noticed how frequent Alexander goes to their store to buy some pizza. Alexander would also always order online, that’s why his name was remembered by Sarah. She sees his name almost everyday or every other day on the monitor where you can see customers waiting for their orders. Alexander orders so often that Sarah already knows when will he place an order every single day.

It was in the year 2009 when Sarah Fuller met Kix Alexander. During that time, she wasn’t a manager yet in Domino’s. Her position then was a delivery driver. Although she really didn’t have that super close relationship with Alexander, she just knew some details about him and his life. She knew that Alexander was working from and leaving the house for him to do exercises is not in his options. She also knew that he had prior health issues.

Mostly, people who are in the same neighborhood, often get together or are close to each other. If someone needs help, they can always ask each other out. As for the neighborhood of Alexander, there was this time that his neighbors would knock but it is very seldom that he’d answer their call. His neighbor, Robert Lalonde, has tried knocking at his door sometimes when he has free time to check on him and visit him. Robert was just living across Alexander.

He shared an instance where he was able to spend time with Alexander even though it wasn’t really a bonding. It was more of helping a neighbor thing. He shared that Alexander is a decent guy and that you can really feel and see that he is not that friendly or attached to his neighbors around the area. He was helped by Alexander in fixing his computer. He also mentioned that Alexander is good at it.

Who wouldn’t remember the guy? Right? And not just that, he’s ordering almost everyday so how would the drivers forget him as well?

It was a great surprise to the staff of Domino’s that Alexander ‘s order stopped completely for free consecutive days. This left the people who knew him in the store to feel uneasy and horrible. They were kind of worried as to what happened to him. They were also thinking that maybe he just went on a trip somewhere, visited his family and friends, or was assigned on a business trip. They were left wondering what could probably be the reason for him to stop ordering.

The staff at the Domino’s, even though they were worried as to what happened to Alexander after not receiving any orders from him in the last couple of days, continued on with their work and normal lives at the store. They just thought of the positive possible things that could be the reason for Alexander’s absence in their customer list. However, when it took longer and longer that they did not receive orders from him, they began to worry and think differently.

Sarah then made it her own little way to dig some information about Alexander. She has some information about Alexander in their system so she used it to check on him.

She then used it to check some information about Alexander as they all seemed to be affected by the absence of Alexander in their customers’ list in the past couple of days. She discovered that it has been 11 days already since Alexander’s last order to them. This was strange for someone who orders everyday for 10 straight years.

Everyone in the team knew him as a kind guy, quiet and friendly. “He orders all the time, so we know him,” Sarah explained in the interview.

He had become like a family to them to the point that they knew how long he’s going to give tips and they also knew that it’s never gonna be like that for this long. He wasn’t just a customer to them. That is how loyal Alexander has been to Domino’s and that’s how frequent her orders from the store. Well, maybe, he just decided not to order another pizza chain? Who knows, right? He’s been eating in the same shop for 10 years.

Every single day that Alexander ordered from Domino’s, the delivery guys were all excited to deliver his order to him. It felt like delivering food to a friend and not just a stranger. That is why when the thought of Alexander ordering and switching to another pizza chain came into their minds, they felt really sad and bad about the possibility.

He always tries something different. “Kirk is a very well-known customer, but he doesn’t have a regular order – he’ll order anything from pasta or pizza to sandwiches or wings. It’s never the same thing every time,” a staff member shared with us.

As shared by the staff member of the shop and obviously, Alexander wasn’t the type of customer to order the same thing always. It is just reasonable since he orders from them almost every day, how could he not try the other items offered in the menu, right? He’ll probably get sick of it if he orders the same thing every time he’ll order. Even the new hot items in the menu, it was mentioned by the staff there that he’s the first one to always try them. Alexander’s loyalty to Domino’s should be awarded!

The staff at the Domino’s pizza were becoming more worried every single day that passes by so that they don’t receive any order from Alexander. It is very unusual that up to that day, after more than 11 days, they still did not receive any. The manager, Sarah, can’t think of any positive possibilities anymore so she decided to ask one of the employees working in the same shop to go by his house and do a check-up on him. It’s the only way to ease their minds and feelings about the situation.

It was indeed a great idea to send someone over to the house of Alexander to check if everything was alright. They were extremely worried of what might have happened to their loyal customer to the point they sent someone over to check up on him. One of their delivery drivers went to Alexander’s house, his name is Tracey Hamblen. Tracey did not hesitate to do what Sarah asked her to do. He went to the house and reached the front door. He heard the noise of television and the lights were on.

Sarah Fuller decided to ask one of the shop’s delivery guys to check on their loyal customer, Alexander. This will help everyone be at ease if they know that Alexander was doing just fine in their home. It was in the wee hours of May 8, around 1:00, that Sarah made that move. Tracey Hamblen, on the other hand, went out right away to confirm Alexander’s situation. It was a slow night for the shop so it wouldn’t hurt if 1 delivery guy leaves for a moment to do it.

Tracey Hamblen did not hesitate to go over to Alexander’s house to check if everything was alright. Alexander, for him, is like a family member already. It doesn’t bother him going there in the middle of wee hours. As a matter of fact, he hopes that he would find an answer to their questions once he arrived there although he is unprepared for what he’s about to see or discover. He just hopes that he will bring good news to his team. Tracey got out of his car and reached the front door of Alexander’s house.

Tracey Hamblen finally reached the front of the house. He was unsure of what to discover but they needed to know what was happening to Alexander. He noticed that the lights inside his home were on and that indicated that he was home! Well, that’s really good news. He definitely got excited about what he found out and felt relieved at the same time. However, a thought came across his mind. If he was home, why didn’t they receive any orders from him?

As he confirmed that Alexander was home for sure because of the lights being left turned on, he knocked on the door to check and make sure that Alexander was doing just fine and that they were just overreacting about him not placing an order for that long. Lights were all on and it is evident that someone is home. The TV was even turned on. There must be someone inside if it is not Alexander. However, he was sure that Alexander would go to the front door and be the one to open it.

Ignoring Him
As sure as he was that Alexander was home, he knocked once again when he received no response in his first knock. He kept knocking at the door as if he’s really sure that someone would open it up for him but to avail. No one opened the door and no one even answered or shouted anything. He didn’t even hear any voices from the inside to ask who he was. He then took out his mobile phone and called Alexander’s number. He still did not get a response. This time, he’s nervous.

In the interview with Good Morning America, Sarah said, “He wasn’t answering his door, but there were lights on, and you could hear the TV playing.” Those were the signs that Tracey Hamblen saw that indicated that someone was inside the house. That’s also the reason why he kept knocking and knocking, knowing and expecting that Alexander was going to open it up for him. However, when Alexander didn’t pick up his phone when they called him, that’s when they decided to call for help, they called 911.

When Tracey Hamblen came back with the news and what he had seen in the house, they knew that the best thing to do is ask for help and call 911 to check what was happening inside Alexander’s home fully. “Scared, worried. What happened? What was going on?” Sarah said.

When Tracey Hamblen came to Alexander’s house and saw that he might be home since the lights were on and the TV was playing, he kept knocking and knocking. If someone was there, or if Alexander was inside, he will open up the door already. So the next thing he did was call him on his mobile, but still, he didn’t receive any response from him. That’s when Tracey felt that something was wrong and that he needed to do something.

Everyone in the team agreed to his plan of calling 911 to confirm if Alexander was okay since he did not receive any response from him after knocking multiple times and calling his mobile phone multiple times too. He knew in his guts that something was wrong and if he were okay, he would answer even just the call, but he didn’t. So Tracey went on and placed the call. It’s better to be safe than sorry, that’s what he thought.

Placing the call to 911 was a unanimous decision among the team that was on duty that time they checked on Alexander’s situation. After Tracey discusses what he saw and what could be the probable cause as to why Alexander wasn’t answering the door and even his phone, they all decided that calling and asking for the help of 911 was the best thing to do. Tracey made a call, “Well, I need some help on what to do, it could be an emergency.”

A Humbling Experience
“This is Domino’s Pizza, and we have a customer that usually orders like every night from us. And he hasn’t ordered in 11 days”, Tracey mentioned in the call with the 911 operator. As a protocol, 911 must first get all the details of what happened and also the details of the persons involved in the situation the caller was reporting before dispatching a team to make a move. Once done, the operator called the Marion County Sheriff’s Department to ask for assistance in checking what was going on in Kirk Alexander’s house.

Tracey Hamblen explained to the operators their concern with the situation with Alexander. He mentioned that he was indeed an extremely loyal customer that he orders almost every night from them for ten straight years and that they haven’t received any orders yet from him for the past 11 days. It has been more than 11 days since his last order and that it worries him as well as the team. This was something extraordinary and unusual. They knew that Alexander wouldn’t do something like that unless he’s away.

After hearing the staff of Domino’s concern for their loyal customer, the police officers and the operators must probably appreciate what they did and are surprised by the story. Not every staff would go at such length when a customer decided not to order one day. They wouldn’t be bothered at all and lived their normal lives forgetting such a customer existed. However, for this branch, it was different. They treated Alexander like a family so it is not hard to notice his absence.

The operators did not neglect the concern of Tracey, although it was not as urgent compared to other calls they were receiving, they still felt the need for their help and suspicion in the situation. The sheriff that the operators called immediately dispatched a few officers to Alexander’s house to confirm if everything was alright and that the staff in the Domino’s branch do not need to worry about anything with his disappearance from their customers’ list. The officers knocked at the door and called for Alexander.

“I guess they could hear him inside, yelling for help. So they broke down the door, and the paramedics got in and got him down to the hospital,” Sarah mentioned in an interview. After learning Kirk’s Alexander’s health profile, they discovered that he had a history of a number of strokes in the past. That might have been the cause for his absence and disappearance, and since he wasn’t someone who has a lot of friends that came by at his house, there was no one who would check upon him.

Once the officers found Alexander lying on the floor, they immediately radioed and requested for an ambulance to attend to Alexander. The ambulance arrived at the scene immediately after receiving the officers’ call. The paramedics then went to Alexander to assess him and check him. They made their best effort to help Alexander in his situation, and luckily, they were able to transfer him to a hospital nearby. Nobody knows what happened yet as they wanted to treat Alexander first before proceeding to investigate what happened.

The officers who attended and were dispatched to Alexander’s house shared that when they found Alexander lying on the floor after they broke his door to be able to enter his house, they immediately assessed him. It was evident that he needed immediate medical attention that’s why they called the ambulance right away after seeing him. They also mentioned that if another had passed that he did not receive any treatment or nobody found him yet. He probably won’t make it and it’s all gonna be too late.

As the police officers described how they found Alexander inside his house, it is like he suffered yet another stroke. Luckily and thankfully, the paramedics who arrived at the scene that time were able to resuscitate him and bring him to the nearest hospital successfully. There was a lot of information to be gathered and questions that needed answers, however, no one witnessed what happened. They can’t tell what had happened as they needed a thorough investigation first with the participation of Alexander.

It is undeniable that what happened was that they got extremely lucky. Especially to Alexander, if the paramedics weren’t able to treat him that day they came, something worse probably happened already to him. He’s indeed lucky that the help just got in time and that he was successfully transferred to the hospital afterwards. The staff at Domino’s were pleased and excited when they found out the news that Alexander was going to be fine and he’s already receiving treatment in the hospital.

“We’re all a family here, and we’re glad that we were able to do something to help. We hope he’s able to recover from this fully,” Sarah mentioned in an interview. The staff at Domino’s were indeed relieved about the news that Alexander was going to be okay. They felt happy that they followed their instinct and called the help of 911. They can’t only imagine what will happen if they let more days pass before they check up on Alexander. Their hunch paid off well.

“We want to give him flowers, cards,” Seiber said. “Hopefully help him recover faster knowing that people do care about him.” It is indeed inspiring to know that no matter how distant or how close you are to a person when the time comes that you need their help, they will help even in just their little way. Also, it is touching to know that even though the good relationship between Alexander and the staff at the Domino’s wasn’t as deep as like a family member, they still cared for him like one.

“The first day we saw him he was a little out of it, just yes or no questions, and then I went back on Monday, and he was doing a lot better,” Seiber mentioned. When you suffer from a stroke, it does take time to recover from it. Alexander might not be able to speak well and normally at that time, but it is evident that he did appreciate everyone’s effort to help him especially calling 911 to check up on him and until the time he’s recovering from the hospital.

Seiber also mentioned, “We saw him yesterday, and he had been moved to a rehabilitation center at the hospital, and he was saying a little bit more.” It is obvious to everyone that she was indeed by his side through his recovery stage, and she never failed to show her support to him. That’s something that Alexander appreciates, even if he’s not able to tell it just yet because of his condition but you knew from his heart how thankful he was to everyone who helped him overcome this part of his life as well as for saving him.

Seiber went on and added, “He’s still exhausted, but he seems to be doing a lot better and making a recovery.” The team’s effort and care about their customers somehow made it to the management. The news reached the head office, and what they did to their loyal customer was recognized. Jenny Fouracre, the Director of Public Relations at Domino’s Headquarters in Ann Arbor, made an official statement about what happened and said that it is exactly what Domino’s customer service is about.

There are thousands of Domino’s stores across the country, but every store is a part of their neighborhood, delivering to people in their homes, which means we often get to know our customers well”, she added in her statement. Every store in the neighborhood indeed becomes part of the neighborhood itself, and it is not impossible for the staff to be close to the customers they’re serving.
