According to legend, Bernadette collapsed to her knees as soon as she walked into the cave, reporting that the figure had resurfaced. Bernadette is believed to have entered a trance-like state, but the other females do not appear to have been impacted in any way by this. According to mythology, two groups of people were able to extinguish the vision following a holy water spray into the darkness and a stone smash on the ground.

Sacred Quinzaine
Following her expulsion from the grotto on February 18, historian Therese Taylor believes Bernadette returned. And on this particular occasion, the enigmatic figure is said to have instructed the adolescent girl to visit the cave on a daily basis for two weeks. Bernadette’s life would be defined by this period, which would come to be known as “la Quinzaine sacrée” – or “holy fortnight” – after the saint who lived during it.
