The animal shelter employees had no idea why this was happening because they had never seen anything remotely like before. The excuses for constantly returning the poor pet sounded too weak and superficial. Furthermore, they were so distinct that at least some of them had to be made up. Some claimed that Benji was overly energetic, while others claimed that he wouldn’t even get out of bed. Some people criticized Benji for being overly enthusiastic. Others stated he avoided going to the park because he was afraid of the other dogs, while others claimed he was hostile toward other dogs.

When the animal shelter’s choices for Benji ran out, they decided to re-offer him for adoption. But he couldn’t spend the rest of his life in the shelter. No one believed that this unhappy dog would ever find a home where he could live out the rest of his days after being returned for the eleventh time. It was also clear that the puppy, with whom everyone at the shelter had grown close, was beginning to experience the consequences of being locked in this never-ending cycle of anguish. They could clearly tell that each time he was returned to that case, the glitter in his eyes had dimmed substantially. It was devastating.
