In April 2014, the Navy completed a 300-page specification report for the Ohio Replacement Program submarines. It’s no surprise that there are many specifications. In fact, there are 159 in all. They include weapons systems, escape routes, fluid systems, hatches, doors, sea water systems, and a set length of 560 ft (170 m). The length is set to allow enough volume inside the pressure hull at all times.

It wasn’t until March 2016 that the Navy announced that the General Dynamics Electric Boat was chosen as the prime contractor and lead design yard. In fact, all 18 Ohio-class submarines have been built by Electric Boat as well. While Electric Boat will be doing most of the work on the 12 new submarines, Huntington Ingalls Industries’Newport News Shipbuilding will serve as the main subcontractor and participate in the design and construction. They will be performing 22%-23% of the required work.

By the end of 2016, the process of hiring employees began. Around 3,000 employees were hired by Electric Boat alone to get started on the design phase of the program. By 2042, all 12 submarines are scheduled to be completed.

These 12 submarines are set to be in service from 2042 all the way until 2085 – 43 years in total. The reason behind the name Columbia is said to be a commemoration of the United States Capitol. In October of 2020, it was announced that the second submarine would be named USS Wisconson while the lead submarine would be named the USS Columbia (SSBN-826). Despite the fact that these submarines are still evolving, they have some very impressive characteristics.

While the Ohio-class submarines required a mid-life refueling, the Columbia-class will have a nuclear fuel core that will be sufficient to power it for the entirety of its expected service life.
