Making Progress
It wasn’t until March 2016 that the Navy announced that the General Dynamics Electric Boat was chosen as the prime contractor and lead design yard. In fact, all 18 Ohio-class submarines have been built by Electric Boat as well. While Electric Boat will be doing most of the work on the 12 new submarines, Huntington Ingalls Industries’Newport News Shipbuilding will serve as the main subcontractor and participate in the design and construction. They will be performing 22%-23% of the required work.

Hiring Employees
By the end of 2016, the process of hiring employees began. Around 3,000 employees were hired by Electric Boat alone to get started on the design phase of the program. The first submarine procurement was scheduled for 2021. The completion of the first submarine is currently scheduled for 2030, while its entry into service is scheduled for 2031. By 2042, all 12 submarines are scheduled to be completed.
