Thad made the decision to take more drastic action since he was determined to go deeper. Perhaps his mother was adding something to the dish that Annie disliked or had an allergy to. He retrieved an old house camera from the attic to investigate. While Annie was at work, Thad installed the camera in their kitchen, making sure it was camouflaged so she wouldn’t see it. Although he felt bad about spying on his own house, he persuaded himself that it was a worthwhile endeavor. What was going on during his mother’s visits that might be creating such a gulf between Annie and his family was something he wanted to know.

His mother arrived with bags of food a week later. She was thrilled to prepare spaghetti alla carbonara, one of Annie’s favorite foods. The smells of pancetta and garlic filled the kitchen as his mother prepared the pasta. Annie came into the kitchen, her face beaming as she noticed the ingredients, and Thad watched her walk in. However, Annie didn’t even take a taste of her food when it was presented; instead, she just played with it, pushing it around her plate. As he watched Annie covertly discard her dish of carbonara while his mother was not watching, Thad felt sick to his stomach.
