Her Research Was Hampered
She was also unable to complete her schooling because of her failing health. Among other things, her reading and writing abilities were weak, and she had only rudimentary mastery of the French language. While Bernadette spoke in Occitan, a language unique to the Pyrenees region where she lived, she was not fluent in English.
The Dungeon
When Bernadette was a youngster, her family’s financial situation had deteriorated to the point where the 11 members of her family were forced to live together in a single underground room at some point during her early infancy. Despite the fact that they were living there for free because of the generosity of Louise’s aunt, the living circumstances were less than perfect. The improvised residence had previously served as a prison cell, garnering the nickname “the dungeon” (the dungeon).
