The new SSBN-X Columbia-class submarine was formerly known as the Ohio Replacement Submarine, but now has a name of its own and is an upcoming class of nuclear U.S. Navy submarines as we’ve mentioned earlier. These submarines are going to be decommissioned, one per year, starting in 2027. After that, the Columbia class is going to take over the role of submarine presence in the United States’ strategic nuclear force. The Navy is planned to purchase 12 of the new submarines. Each one of these submarines will have 16 missile tubes, each one carrying one Trident II D5LE missile. However, other things need to be taken into account when creating a submarine like this one.
