Design Information
Back in 2017, the U.S. Navy released a statement on the matter, saying, “owing to the unique demands of strategic relevance, SSBN(X)s must be fitted with the most up-to-date capabilities and stealth to ensure they are survivable throughout their full 40-year life span.” However, certain design elements have been discussed as early as 2012. They included X-shaped stern control surfaces (hydroplanes), Sail-mounted dive planes, and Electric drive, among other things.

What Is Electric Drive?
If you’re like us, you might be wondering what an Electric drive is. It’s a propulsion system that uses an electric motor that turns the propeller of a vessel. It’s actually part of a larger concept that has the aim of creating an all-electric vessel. Using this element is said to reduce the life-cycle cost of submarines while also reducing their acoustic signature. In the past, Turbo-electric drive has been used on U.S. capital ships in the first half of the 20th century.
