Startled by what the ultrasound showed, Becky let out a loud gasp. An automatic reaction to the bizarre, inconceivable sight caused her hand to fly to her lips. “Jesus Christ,” she said, her heart thumping against her chest like a drum. She glanced at the anxious, apprehensive looks of everyone else in the room. As she pieced together the ramifications of what she had just witnessed, her mind raced. The veterinarian technicians rushed over, their faces turning white at what they saw on the screen. “What on earth is that?” One of them stepped back reflexively, eyes wide with shock, and murmured. With a chorus of chills of fright and murmured exclamations, everyone was speaking at once. Becky urged herself to remain composed as she gave a little shake of her head. These dogs needed her assistance now more than ever, regardless of what was going on here. Time was of the essence.
